  • A word to describe Cats by STEVE SUR1.KS Sports Editor Amazing. Incredible. Unbelievable. Those are just a few adjectives that can describe the Catamounts upsets of UT-Chattanooga, Furman and Appalachian State in little over a week of play. What Steve Cottrell's Cats have done is beyond description and, really comprehension. Wasn't this the team that started from the bottom of the basketball world last year. It's hard to fathom the amazing progress that the program here at Western has had. Yet now it's there in black and white in the record books. Cottrell led the Cats to four Southern Conference upsets last year, and that 68-54 rout of ASU in Bubba Wilson's last Reid Gym game but, for heaven's sake, who would have thought WCU could beat the top preseason favorites for the Southern Conference championship like we did. The Cats fought back and clawed their way to the victories, coming from behind in every one, fighting through tons of adversity in each game to shock the Southern basketball world. They didn't shoot well against the Mocs but went up to them elbow-to-elbow to squeeze a monumental triumph in Reid Gym. Then they took a gutty, fired up defense to the Furman Palladins and won that one going away. To really show what the team was BUdC >>t lln t .its erased a five point lead with 29 seconds despite some unGodly foul shooting, and a circus act for officiating to stun our good friends in Boone. Incredible. Of course we've lost a game or two in there somewhere—but that is just the point. We'll lose a tew more because there is still a long road ahead for the team to go—but the potential is there for The Cats to make a name for themselves in Southern Conference basketball. The upsets are just an indication, a sign, the tip of the iceberg for the basketball program at WCU. I'm not predicting the Cats will become the UCLA of the South. I'm just saying they've come a long way in a short time—potential and a bright future should be the byword for the Cats. They will lose a few before it's over but the competitive, exciting major college Division I team we all want is coming to us. In the remaining games let's fill Reid Gym with support equal to the Cats' fired-up play. WinTose or draw let's pack Keid up and help carry the progress to the fullest point of its potential. JANUARY 25, 1979/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 5 -INCREDIBLE! Western knocks off SC leaders like flies Women wilt under ASU charge The WCU Women's basketball team split two games over the weekend with an 83-62 rout over UNC-G in Reid Gym Saturday, and an 88-75 defeat by the Lady Apps of ASU Monday night in Boone. Against Greensboro, the Lady Cats used a 58 percent shooting second half to pull away for the victory. Ahead 37-30 at the half the girls hit 19 of 33 shots to outscore UNC-G 46-32 in the second half. Jayne Arledge led the team with 20 points. Sandra Julian added 14, Beth Crisp 12, and Lenora Freeman 11 to give the Lady Cats their eighth win of the season. Anna Parker led UNC-G with 33 points and 12 rebounds. The Lady Apps revenged an early season loss to Western with a solid victory over the Cats. Down by 11, 45-34. at the half. Coach Betty Westmoreland's club could never catch up. Poor shooting hurt the Lady Cats, as they shot only 39 percent to ASU'S phenomenal 59 percent. Beth Crisp led Western with 28 points, Sandra Julian added 16, with Sheila Barker's 11, and Jayne Arlcdge's 10 points rounding out the scoring. ASU was led by Muriel Higginbotham's 22 points, 16 from Taiana McEntire and Angelita Horton, and 12 points from Nina Foust. The loss left The Lady Cats 8-8 overall and 3-4 in NCAIAW play. ASU upped their record to 6-5 with the victory. The next action for the Lady Cats will be Saturday's away game with Campbell College.
