Senate eyes awesome agenda by J.M.TRINKS Senate Reporter Senators-at-Large Richard Sullins and Timothy Sikes, two of the three senators with the most seniority, resigned Monday night. Sullins was later approved as the replacement for Luther Hollingsworth as Director of Legal Assistance, and Sikes became a vice presidential assistant. Senator Mark Asa is now the ranking senator with 18 months seniority. Other appointments by the Senate are Elizabeth Shoaf, director of the Office of Refrigerator Leasing, Jim Roshelli, replacing Michael Cantey as the director of Student Government Productions, and Maria Marshall, assistant director of legal assistance. In other business, the Committee on the Xerox Copier sponsored SR 755, a bill establishing new guidelines for using the copy machine in the SGA office. Only funded clubs and organizations now have the privilege of using it and under no circumstances can it be used for one's personal use. Hours for using the machine are Tuesday and Thursday from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. and Wednesday and Friday from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. It is available only to the Senate from 2 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. Monday. Organizations using the SGA copier paper will be charged two cents per copy. This fee will be handled by the Comptroller's office and bills will be sent tri-monthly. (This particularly item will become effective July 1.) Organizations using their own paper will receive free service. The bill was to have been sent to the Committee on Student Government Services. Senator Rebecca Nelson made a motion to suspeM the rules so the Senate could vote on the measure Monday night. Her motion passed; APPALACHIAN—Base of 25-45 inches. Wet snow surface. Five inches of new natural snow. Skiing tonight. however, Senator Marx Asa objected. Ms. Nelson said she thought the Committee on the Xerox Copier should know more about its use than any other committee and therefore the delay would not be necessary. Sen. Michael Femia made a motion to instate Section "G." This provides that the Office of the President is to fully inform all funded clubs and organizations immediately of the new guidelines. The bill passed in its entirety. The Office of the Vice President sponsored SR756, an act "to direct the purchase of a more efficient and less expensive copier system for SGA, to compliment the already existing SGA Xerox Copier." The bill stipulated that the present machine has been used for seven years and has been "an ever increasing expense of the Student Government General Fund and that of the Budget of the Student Government Office itself." It also said that the Ditto Corporation produces an alcohol base duplicating machine "at the purchase range of $600" and a duplicating cost of five cents (which does not include the cost of the paper.) It also wanted the machine purchased "within the next one month period." By an objection of consideration, Senator Bobby Street succeeded in having the bill tabled indefinitely. He said the Finance Committee was still working on a plan of either buying a new Xerox machine or another brand, and an extra $600 was not available in the government's budget to purchase one. The vice president was supposedly aware of the Finance Committee's present plans. Senate Resolution 758, a bill to establish guidelines for the appointment of students by the student body president to either the University-Wide or Faculty Senate Committees, was referred to the Committee on Rules. The bill recommends four guidelines: the appointee must have a cumulative 2.0 QPR and have the available time; the president must present a list of all of his committee appointments to the Senate; all appointees must report in writing to the Senate at least twice each semester on their committees' activities and actions; and the president is required to remove any appointee who does not attend at least half of his committee meetings without an excused absence. President Wanda Nelson urged the Senators to attend the annual meeting of the North Carolina Association of Student Governments to be held at the Raleigh Holiday Inn January 29-February 1. She said Gov. James Hunt is expected to attend some of the sessions that will range from legislation to legal a **si*itiincc Vice President Phillip Cates said there would be "an attempt to compose and stage a representation of the 100,000 students in the Universityof North Carolina System against any tuition increase. "I assure you that, as it stands now, there's going to be a tuition increase. It's already in the works by three legislators from both Houses who serve on the Educations Appropriations Committee, and it's not going to be a small hike," Cates said. Ms. Nelson said the reason for the convention being held next Wednesday through Friday was so those attending could meet legislators and lobby at the General Assembly.
