  • NOVEMBER 2, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 5 sports Water polo begins Wednesday Intramural water polo begins next Wednesday at WCU, preceded by a special clinic on the sport Monday and Tuesday nights from 8 to 9 p.m. The clinics are to show basic rules and skills to incoming players. Intramural director Mike Creason said that water polo at WCU draws a minority of participants but, "those who play love it and are very eager to play every year." The game is an interesting combination of basketball and soccer. Five players constitute a team. The object of the game is to throw or place the ball into the opponent's goal. The defense can try to take the ball away from the offense by any number of ways—making the sport a fast action contact game for water-lovers. A tough goal is worth three points and is when the offense places or throws the ball into the goal. A throw goal is two points and when the ball hits any part of the goal board. A penalty throw (one point) occurs on a foul or violation. Players, with the exception of the goalie, are allowed to handle the ball with only one hand at a time. (Goalies use both hands, except in certain situtations.) A typical water polo game wil have a lot of passing, ball movement and exchange of possession. The game may have begun in the 1870's by the London Swimming Association as a type of football played in the water. In the 1890's athletic clubs in America took up the game and in recent years it has JL W6-2HI6 SHOW TIMES MON.-SAT. 7&9 .
