  • Editorial Commuters get the shaft again I irst they hit us with parking meters, then they take a big chunk of parking space from WCU commuter students! It seems the university has declared war In the parking lots on commuters. .Now, it seems that if a university, with proper planning, had an inconveniently located parking area, it should be used to store the ears that get the least amount of use, i.e. the resident students. But no, WCU has elected to give its new parking lot on the edge of campus to Ihe commuters who must be in and out of their cars all day. It doesn't make sense to students going to classes every day in the new M/E building and Reid Gym to be forced into a hike from the Baptist Church to their classrooms. These same students used to be able to park on Warehouse Road and behind the UC, much nearer to Reid, M/E and Killian. These students have to use their autos every day where most resident students do not. It only makes sense to inconvenience some people some of the time rather than some of the people all the time. C'mon, folks, consider the plight of the poor commuters when designating parking areas. Telephone ripoff Dear Editor, If you are a college student here at Western and ever hope of moving off campus. 1 hope you do not have the same kind of problem I am experiencing. The apartment and location (Webster) are fine, but I can't get a telephone. You see, that world famous, highly successful company called Western Carolina Telephone sees me as a bad risk. Here is what they told me when I saw them about a phone. •First you must pay $16 installation charge, $15 or so for the first month. Wait don't forget the deposit. Total about $50 for sure. •Second, you can get someone to sign in case you don't pay. Having no money this is what I did. My parents agreed. My dad makes good money and we have three phones at home. My mom even worked for Southern Bell for ten years. No problem getting a phone I thought. Bullshit; Iwas denied because I was a "class D" or high risk. Well excuse mell Who the hell are these people running this rinky-dink outfit anyway? Thev may be an "Equal Opportunity Employer" but they are also equally ignorant of who their present and future customers are. and were in my case. College students are a special kind of people. A college town is a Special kind of place, and a telephone company which services both these should understand the problems. But Western Carolina Telephone seems to have the receiver up their rear end. What do they think I'm going to do. skip to Antarctica after my first bill or something? Maybe they should move down there. The temperature would surely fit both the company and its employees. Oh yes, Western Carolina Telephone Company here is your "class D" credit, it will fit nicely right beside the receiver. Your company (unlike Southern Bell) truly is the next best thing to nothing. Ronnie Lovcn Commuters unite! Dear Editor, Today, after searching for a parking space for 10 minutes, I finally found "old faithful" (parking lot on Warehouse Road) empty and proceeded to park. Well, on returning about an hour and a half later I found a little green slip of paper, better known as a warning ticket, on my windshield. At this time 1 almost passed away with shock. How and why can this be? I realize the residents of Scott, Leatherwood and possibly Helder have lost some of their own parking spaces to the new administration T***T *-A1>Jtr viol) building, but why must commuters carry yet another load caused by change? I personally have nothing against walking and think more students at Western should do so. But we commuters already have problems with carrying books for a whole day, possibly a change of clothes if you work with Intramurals or have a job on campus after classes. Or maybe, heaven forbid, you might forget something in your car which is behind the Baptist Church while you are at Reid or Killian and have five minutes to make a mad dash! Are all the parking spaces at the Football Stadium full? I seriously doubt this. For sure, when we have a football game resident cars are not moved as they should be and if they knew they really would be towed away, they might saunder on out and move their cars early Saturday morning. Why couldn't the Warehouse Road lot have at least been split with half for the ever searching commuter and half for the resident student. Or possible, do the freshman that have cars park where they are supposed to? When I drive to campus I have a purpose, when I park 1 have a purpose and when I leave I have a purpose. All the purposes I have mentioned stem from a need to be present in class or some function required of me by the university and then I leave to go home. Residents are located on campus with good access to all facilities. And their need for transport is usually for groceries, clothes, going to Waynesville and on weekends going home. So how about a break for commuters who feel like Don Quixote, or we would settle for half a break. Roseanna J.
