  • PAGE 12/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/SEPTEMBER 21, Letters, more letters WJ. miffed Dear Editor, Wesley Foundation scheduled SGA officers Wanda Nelson and Phil Cates for Vespers last Sunday. We are disappointed to have to inform you and WCU students that neither of them arrived or contacted anyone at W.F. to cancel the engagement. Much time was spent planning the program, publicizing it, and preparing refreshments for it. Not only does this lack of responsibility provide more bad publicity for SGA, but it also embarrasses W.F. members when we have guests here to hear the program. Mr. Cates was contacted several times last week concerning his commitment to present a program at Vespers on September 17. Mr. Cates assured me that he would be in contact with Ms. Nelson, and that both of them would be there. On his word, announcements 1978 were aired on WWCU, posters were printed and distributed around campus, and people were told by word of mouth that SGA officers Cates and Nelson would be at W.F. September 17 at 7 p.m. They were not there. I spoke with Mr. Cates Monday concerning his absence. I had to try to track him down for over three hours until I was able to locate him to speak with him. He informed me that he not only had not spoken with Ms. Nelson, but was in Greensboro, at UNCG at a state SGA meeting when he should have been at W.F. When asked if he had been aware of the conflict when the date for the program at W.F. had been set he said yes, but he expected to be back in time. He said that he didn't have the phone number of W.F. with him so that he could call if he would be late. Mr. Cates said that he thought his irresponsibility on his part should be played down, and, in fact, that it was unnecessary to publicize it. He displayed a prominent attitude that he shouldn't be expected to be responsible for informing W.F. that he would not be able to return to Cullowhee in time to U.SJNAVYIOFFICERISELECTIONITEAM The U.S. Navy Officer Information Team will be on campus September 26 thru 28. Naval Officers will be on hand to talk to interested persons concerning Officer Positions in Nuclear Power, Aviation, Supply Corps (business management), Line, and several scholarship programs. Mr. Cates agreed to come to W.F. October 1 and present his program. He did not commit Ms. Nelson this time, and she has not been reached as of this time. As soon as 1 have a definite answer from her signs will go up, commercials will be put on the radio, and an ad will be placed in the paper. Work for this program will begin. This letter is not intended as more bad publicity for SGA. but instead to inform students of what SGA is doing and not doing. I speak only for myself and my committee members. You are welcome to come to W.F. October 1 and hear Wanda and Phil speak for themselves. Sincerely, Abbie Yandle Program Chairman Program Evaluation Committee: Catherine Curson—President Linda Osterhage—Secretary Richard Sigmon—Publicity Chairman Susan Morris—Social Concerns Chairman Nelson responds Dear Editor, In reply to the letter from the members of the Wesley Foundation, I would like to say that I was flattered that I was asked to speak; the unfortunate factor for both parties involved was the fact that I was never notified of the invitation. Had I been contacted personally, this problem would never have arisen. In my position as President of SGA, I view an opportunity to speak with a group of students as a priviledge; that personal contact is of the utmost importance, not only on the level of speaker to audience, but also club representative to the invited party. That contact was lacking in this particular situtation, and somehow I feel the blame lies somewhere in between. I will close with the statement that I would be happy to meet with any club or organization here at Western, simply speak to me about it. Sincerely, Wanda L.
