  • SEPTEMBER 14, 1978/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/PAGE 5 Biliy Bryant an example Co-op can lead to jobs by LAURA WEST Staff Writer Billy Bryant, a senior majoring in the field of Parks and Recreation Management, spent his summer working as a desk clerk at the Grove Park Inn in \sheville. Not only did Bryant gain experience in his field but also received three semester hours emit in his major. Billv applied for tin- job through the Co-op service, Ihe Go-op program is designed to help students find jobs related to their fields of study. The usual schedule for a Co-op student is to alternate semesters working and going to school. However, Bryant is working onlv in the summers so he can continue attending class both tall and spring semesters, Bryant plans to graduate Irom WCU in Mav and then complete his Co-op certification in the summer. Alpha Lambda Delta As desk clerk, Bryant was responsible not only tor clK-cking people ill but also tor fielding complaints Despite tin- aarJeasarJr) ot handling complaints, Bnant found his first summer Co-oping an enjoyable and educational experience. He especial) liked meeting various pervinalities who were guests at the hotel. Ill his work. He also enjoyed working with the several groups hosled bv the hotel, including conventions held bv DuPont AmWav. Sarah Coventry, and several insurance companies. Bv working at the Grove Paik Inn, Bnant was in a position to observe the operations earned oul bj the A select few are taken Alpha Lambda Delta is an honorary fraternity open to freshmen who obtain a OI'R of 3.5 or better during their first semester of college work. It is a national organization with a chapter membership of 194 campuses nationwide and two campuses in North Carolina. At WCU. as in all chapters of Alpha Lambda Delta, the purpose Of this honor society is to promote academic schlorship among students in their first vear of college. Activities include services such as helping with the Special Olympics and raising money for beneficial organizations such as the American Cancer Society, This year the WCU chapter plans to become involved in many activities which will further the purpose ot Alpha Lambda Delta. Active membership ends at the beginning of one's junior year, but upperclass members remain ill the fraternity and may attend meetings. Presently, there are 21 active members and 21 other students who are eligible for membership The lirK ">> president is Lynn Brown.
