Ordinarily doctors are concerned only with preserving life regardless of the quality of that life. If a doctor "pulls a plug," or fails to inform his patient of life-support machines, he puts himself in danger of a malpractice suit. Dr. Tye also suggests the following changes in our health care program: •Control of licensing doctors should be taken out of the hands of the AMA. •Instead of pouring money into the demand side, pour money into the supply side. Spend more on training doctors and make it possible for women and blacks to have the opportunity for medical training. •Emphasis should be placed on educating para- protcssionals. • Increase funding for those spending time practicing in rural communities. Perhaps create a program in which a student has a scholarship to attend med school to be paid back by practicing in a rural community. •Allow doctors to advertise so the public will know what kind of fees to expect. • Put emphasis on prevention. Information on diet, smoking, living conditions, and their effects on health should be available. •Make it easier for people to refuse life-support systems in the case of a terminal illness. Emphasis should not be placed on the length of life, but rather on the quality of life. Dr. Walton of the history department concluded the evening's panel of speakers with his views of socialized medicine. Coming from England, Dr. Walton was able to compare our system of health care to the socialized system there. According to Walton, the English system is relatively inexoensive. However the English tend to cut corners rtrasticallv Dr. Walton stated that any health care system must not only be good, but people must also believe in the system. At this time, according to Walton, This country has no health system. It knows not where is is going nor h°Walton stated he is personally in favor of governments controlling health care programs. However he is not convinced that the U.S. government is able to handle the job. The only national health care he sees in the future is through a funding system like social security, which he sees as regressive.
