Three Catamounts were also selected for honorable mentions: offensive guard Robbie Vannoy and defensive backs Willie Carpenter and Thomas Gunn. Another three WCU players were named to the 11-man Southern Conference All-Academic team announced Thursday. Western finished 10th in the U.S. in passing and the all-sophomore secondary finished as the nation's eighth best unit against the pass giving up just 96.9 yards per game. The Camels, now 2-2, never got closer than 9 points the rest of the way. "The key was our fast break and defense that produced the opportunities," said Cottrell, the 33-year old former SMU assistant who replaced Fred Conley this summer in his first head coaching position. "We are happy with the win because of what it means to our program, and to a bunch of kids who didn't know what they would do together," said Cottrell. "This was actually the first varsity game for 12 of the 14 guys we had dressed." Person was the foremost of those players. He hit 13 of 24 field goal attempts and 5 of 9 foul shots, and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead that department. Other double-figure scorers for Western were sophomore Jimmy McCallister, who had 13 points, and Rutherford with a long-range 14 points. The best Campbell could offer was John Heckstall's 16 points from a forward spot. "We hustled, were aggressive and played with enthusiasm," said Cottrell, whose Cats were picked to finish eighth in the Southern Conference this season with only guard Bubba Wilson returning from last year's 8-16 team. "That style has got to be our trademark," continued Cottrell.
