PAGE 14/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20. 1977 Lees angered by investigation Catamount given clean bill of health The investigation into the trust fund of the Catamount by the comptroller's office has ended according to business manager David Lees. "Davis Gardner met with David Turbyfill (comptroller) Tuesday night and everything's fine now as far as I know. We've got to show him our books Friday and then it's over," Lees said. The investigation began when a reported discrepency was found in the Catamount funds but Lees said, "they haven't found one because it's not there to find. Apparently, it all began because I didn't know what an expense on the budget had been spent on from last year and neither did Davis. It turned out that it was for a typewriter repair." The trust fund is composed of "all money taken in from ad sales and yearbook monev." Lees said He noted the trust fund was set up for "emergency Track team wins by JOHN BURSON Sports Editor Dennis Kasprzyk ran to a new WCU six mile record with a time of 30:24, placing twenty-fourth in a field of 111 runners, at the Furman Invitation held at Furman University last Saturday. Mike Randall set a new freshman record for six miles run with a time of 33:03, placing forty-third. Also putting in a good performance was Jeff Cloninger. who van a 32:54, placing eighty-eighth. The competition was tough with teams like the University of Tennesee at Knoxville, who is ranked number 5 in the nation, and East Tennessee, which is ranked number 10 in the nation. But we did run our worst meet of the season," Coach Paul Jones situations" several years ago. "The trust fund was set up when appropriations were cut from $35,000 to $23,000. We've got $6,049 in the trust fund so if they [senate] cut us down to $20,000 we'll be ready for them," Lees said. Lees is bitter about the investigation because he believes it was brought about by problems encountered with last year's business staff. Lees said, "When Joe Plan/ was comptroller last year he apparently had some problems with the past business manager turning in the monthly reports promptly. This year he decided to bring legal action against us. He held the new administration responsible for what happened last "The SGA doesn't have control over any organization's trust fund except we must submit our accounts to them. It is ours to work with as long as it is sound business policy; they can't say anything. Now if we were to buy a station wagon to haul beer from Waynes- ville they could say, 'you shouldn't do that,' but that's it," Lees said. CAP Center Early advisement for CAP Center advisees will be October 31 thru November 14. If you have NOT received a letter from your adviser announcing the time and place of an early advisement meeting, come by the CAP Center to make an appointment BEFORE early registration. Permits-to-register for CAP Center advisees will be available at the CAP Center November 15-17. You must have a voucher signed by your adviser in order to pick up your permit. commented. "We have the State Championships and ihe Conference Championships coming up and in order for us to do good, we will have to run tiwh more ind intensity." ALPHA KAPPA PSI LESLIE ANN BRITTON FOR HOMECOMING QUEEN '77 Lees asserts the only reason he took the job was because "noone wanted the job and I was interested in it. So 1 went from photographer to a business manager and that's been my biggest problem. Everyone expects me to know it all." He reiterated that he was confident with the job saying, "I feel totally confident with the job, especially with Davis there to help me. I feel perfectly capable of doing a good job. but I just had to get adjusted to it." The reason the Catamount proposed a salary increase of over $2,000 was, "we were considering a possible increase for the photographers. We pay them per print and we were thinking about increasing their pay." Lees said the photographers "buy their own chemicals, paper, everything. We just supply the room for them and the equipment." Equipment and money are two of the Catamount's biggest problems Lees said. "It's about time to upgrade our office. We have two electric typewriters and one Royal (manual) along with three desks and a room. That's it. We've been keeping a tight budget as all we've done is pay salaries and buy a rubber stamp." The Catamount "is preparing to buy a light table which would cost "A minimum of $1,000," Lees said. Other equipment would probably be bought later "if the money's there." Lees pointed out that the money has been there for the past few years. "We're one of the few organizations on campus which had money left at the end of last The Greek Beat ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY ASKOSI, KAI AXIOSIS—By Culture and By Merit, a motto many women pledge their hearts and souls.
