Ole'! The Luis Rivera Spanish Dance Company will perform at 8:15 p.m. September 27 in Hoey as part of a two-and-a-half day residency. The company, which has performed throughout the U.S. and in Bermuda, Newfoundland, Denmark and England, is led by Luis Rivera, formerly principal male dancer with the world-famous Jose Greco company. Rivera, recently returned from a seven-month world tour as guest artist with the Jose Greco troupe, was born in California and studied dancing in Los Angeles and Spain. He has been a member of the Ballet Espanol Ximenez-Vargas, and at the New York World's fair was the only non-native member of Spain's Ballet Lorquiana. He has performed in major theaters, hotels and night clubs throughout the world, as well as at Montreal's Expo '70, Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens, and at the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival. Other members of the company include Melinda Montoya, a former classical ballerina who has taught Spanish dance at the Harkness School of Dance, and Manuela Reyes, a veteran of Madam La meri's Ethnic Dance Festival. The performance will be sponsored by the WCU Lectures, Concerts, and Exhibitions Committee. Admission will be free to WCU students and subscription series members of the LCE, $3 for other adults, and $1 for non-WCU students. Tickets will be on sale at the door. The company will conduct residency classes at WCU Sept. 26-28. Appalachian feminism Judy Stillion, Barbara Mann to discuss growing up "Growing Up Female in Appalachia" is the theme of the First Annual Meeting of the Council on Appalachian Women to be held in the Grandroom of the U.C. on October 7. Registration is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. with the program beginning at 1:30 p.m. Dr. Betty Siegel. Dean of the School of Education and Psychology, will present the keynote address preceded by a welcome from Chancellor H. F. Robinson. A slide/tape presentation entitled "Sex Role Stereotypes" by Dr. Judith Stillion, Acting Head. Psychology Department, and Barbara Mann, Dean of Student Development, will follow the address. After a brief refreshment break at 3:15, the program will resume with a panel discussion of "Growing Up Female in Appalachia". Panel participants who are all natives of the region include: Pat Beaver, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Appalachian State; Laura Hill King. Director of the Cherokee Bi-lingual Project in Cherokee; Cecilia Rogers, retired domestic worker; Mary Jane Putzell, student at Appalachian State and mother of four, who has returned to work on a degree; Helen Powell, community health advocate working closely with brown and black lung victims in West Virginia. Betty Gene Alley. Chief Court Counselor of the 30th Judicial District, will serve as panel moderator. The meeting will be concluded with closing remarks from Jeanne Hoffman. President of the Council on Appalachian Women. This meeting is open to anyone interested in the concerns of the Appalachian region, particularly the concerns of the female population. The Council on Appalachian Women is a support group for women which seeks to identify the specific needs of Appalachian women and initiate programs to meet those needs. We welcome your interest and support. P. E. department lets kids swim There will be a swim program for children ages 6 months through 2 yrs. old and their parents on the campus of Western Carolina University. The program, which is sponsored by the Physical Education Dept.. will meet at 10:00 a.m. on Monday and Wednesday mornings at Breese pool. Parents should have the approval of their family physician and bring with them to the class a letter or notice of the child having received a recent physical examination. Campus parking will be available behind the Baptist Church with a visitor parking permit or campus registration sticker.
