  • THURSDAY, JULY 14,1977 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Move to annex underway Bassett: 'still a few bugs' Work has been completed and materials moved into the new $3.5'million science annex building. According to Dr. Bassett, coordinator of facilities, and space for the school of arts and sciences, the move began on Tuesday of.lastweek. Dr. Bassett indicated the move from Stilkvell is 75 per cent complete, adding that the Custodian staff was really •making the thing go." Bassett said there were still "a few bugs to be worked out." A number of specialized labs and rooms were incorporated into the design. These include a fishery research room, a photo lab, two animal rooms, two large growth rooms, a meteorology lab with equipment on the roof of the building, an archaeology lab, and a science education curriculum materials resource center. Graduate and undergraduate research labs and conventional laboratories take up the rest of the building. The new annex, said Bassett, was built as a."well designed, flexible research facility," Bassett further stated the. purpose of the building as "a laboratory ■science building with a large lecture hall.'' Signs on the doors leading into it state 'Auditorium.' It is, however,'a very well equipped, truly functional lecture half.. .There is a control panel for lights, with ■ dimmers for more control'over illumination, and a switch to raise and lower. an 'automatic movie screen. Ttie double blackboard also incapable of being raised and lowered. Rows of chairs are interspersed with tows of ■ ■.desks. •.;■■ - ■•■'.!■ ■' '■..".: When asked about the unusual coloring of the interior of the annex. Bassett said it was '.'to give pizzazz, to brighten up the atmosphere in the science labs." Dr. $assett also expressed the hope "that students will enjoy . working in the new building." ''..-.. According'to Bassett. the annex's main attraction "will- ;.' be that it "gives;WCU the.-opportunity to carry but active' research in science in''space designed for research .' 'endeavors.''
