  • Thursday, June 23, 1977 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Fiber exhibition showing next week The National Invitational Fibers Exhibition, a travelling exhibit depicting a broad range of contemporary art in the textiles medium, will DC on display here Monday through July 18. The exhibit will open with a public reception Monday at 7 p.m. in the art gallery of Belk. At the reception, Glen Kaufmann of the University of Georgia will present an illustrated lecture on contemporary textiles. Kaufmann. who works in braided vinyl and plastics, is one of ten artists whose work will be on display. His talk will be at 8 p.m. Another artist represented is Sheila Hicks of Paris, whose large interior decorative works may be seen at New York's Kennedy Airport terminal and the CBS Building. Gcrhardt Knodel. head of the fabric design department at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfielci. Mich., will display some of his large suspended hangings in rcsist-dyed silk. Other artists in the show include Lenore Davis of Buffalo. N.Y.. who works in dyeing and quilting; Wayne Devenev ol ( ullow hee. gauze sculpture; Gwen hn (loo of Boston University, silk screen hangings; Ron Goodman of Washington, D.C., mammoth crochet sculptures; and Rudy Kovacs of Wichita, Kansas, woven wall pieces. Also, Jon Riis of Atlanta, Ga., miniature woven people encased metal, and I'd Rossbach of the University of California at Berkeley, who works in ancient basketry techniques with contemporary materials. The exhibit, funded by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, is sponsored in Cullowhcc by the WCU art department. Codirectors of the exhibit are Dr. Perry Kcllv and Melissa Murray. The art gallery is open 8 a.m. until noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 2 - 4 p.m. on .Sundays. Lifestyle also features Dianne Steinerg's debut album on ABC records. Universal Child, showcases lhe gifted songstess m a broad range of settings - from sensitive ballads to high energy tunes. Ms. Steinberg is an exremelv attractive lady, an expressive vocalist and a line song writer who has the ability to incorporate ja/z. rock. pop. RMI, and even country into her music. Universal Child is a Fasman-Pomcranz Production which features an all-star line-up that includes Jim Horn, Jeff I'ocaro. David I'aicb and I om Scott backing the talented Dianne Steinberg New from ABC '-Impulse is Sonny ( riss' The Joy of lhe Sax. which producer Esmond Edwards calls "a perfect example of a brilliant jazz artist presented in a commercial context with absolutely no compromise in quality." C'riss has played with some of the very best Ray Charles, Bill) Eckstine, Quincy Jones. Buddy Rich. Dizzv Gillespie, to name a lew and now he brings his own special magic to the songs of Stevie Wonder. Billy Preston, Phil Spector, Oliver Nelson and others Ship of Memories on Sire Records is a retrospective collection from Focus, one ol the first and most important progressive rock groups, 'complete with revealing liner notes by producer Mike Vernon. Ship of Memories chronicles this phenomenal Dutch band's most magical moments and it is sure to become a collector's item.
