SGA elections still plagued by controversy, complexity The slate is set for the 1477 SGA Spring Elections— almost. More political hassles must be endured and decisions made. Last night in an emergency meeting, the Student Senate named three new members to the elections commission to replace people who had resigned. Senators John Harbison. John Parker, and Mike Wade were named to replace Senators Steve Sherman, Bruce Pugh, and Dorinda Watkins. The commission is scheduled to meet today at 2 p.m. to consider letters from the UCB, WWCU. Catamount, and Western Carolinian listing approved candidates— and controversy is expected, according to several SGA Tuesdav night the Western Carolinian executive committee disqualified hopeful candidate Doug Beam from the editor race, saying that he is unqualified because he has no production room newspaper experience and no experience on the Western Carolinian. Beam is going to appeal the decision to the elections saying he is qualified, the Western Carolinian is a closed organization, and the i committee is trying to til < t the editor, since only one candidate remains on the ballot. Rick Eichhorn. Arguments are scheduled to be presented by both sides, but SGA sources have it that the commission is now leaning in Beam's direcion. Beam has had four years of experience on a daily newspaper, and two on a weekly as a photographer and "correspondent." He also was the editor of his junior high school paper and worked on his high school yearbook. Western Carolinian Interim Editor A. E. Borwn. Jr., who said he does not entirely agree with the executive committee's decision, said, "The committee did it bv the book, and continues, and will continue, to standby it," In other Senate action last night Sen. Carol Acuff. chairperson of the ad hoc committee on co-ed housing, reported a co-ed housing bill sponsored by Sen. Nancy Hope out of the committee for women's affairs. The bill, which was approved by the Senate calls for the moving of women to Albright, and moving to men displaced from there to the first four floors of Scott. The proposal will be studied bv the WCU administration and Board of Trustees. The slate of candidates for the April 28 election now looks like this: president: Patrick Murphy and Nancy Hope; vice-president: Gary Brown and Al lagano; Western Carolinian editor: Rick Eichhorn; Western Carolinian business manager: Cheryl Higham, Rodney Cranford, and David Curtis; WWCU general manager: Jake Phillips; Catamount editor: Billy Hart; Catamount business manager: David Lees; UCB president: Gary Vogler; UCB vice-president: John Lane; three senator-at- large seats: Al Lagano, Ed Huneycutt, Debbie Rawls. Dianna Schmert/.ler. Cynthia Shaad. Jonathan McLean, David K. Tedrow, Richard M. Johnson. Chuck Russel, and James W. Barden; eight commuter senator seats: Scott Wood, Joe Planz, Chuck Russell, James W. Barden, A.E. brown, Jr., Greg Lytle. Al Lagano, Nancy Hope, and Mark Fulmer. The elections will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 28 on the first floor UC. Bids for new administration building received Apparent low bids totaling $2,898,385 were received Tuesday by WCU for its new Administration Building- Mountain Heritage Center. The total is within funds available for the project, Dr. H. F. Robinson. WCU chancellor, said. "We're extremely pleased at the bidding and the design work that has been done by our architects, Odell Associates Inc. of Charlotte." he said. Bids received Tuesday are subject to review by university and state officials before any contracts are awarded. The total of the apparent low bids included a variety of alternates such as parking areas, a canopy at the Heritage Center entrance, cabinet work and carpeted Buncombe Construction Co. of Asheville, which has nearly completed work on WCU's new $3.5 million natural sciences building, was apparent low bidder on the general contract with a total bid of $2,108,000. Other apparent low bidders were: plumbing. Industrial Maintenance Overflow Corp. of Hendersonville, $121,315; electrical, Overcash Electrical Co. of Moores- ville. $250,570; mechanical. Community Heating and Plumbing Co. of Greensboro. $418,500. Funds for the new building were approved last year in a state higher education capital improvements bond issue. Other bids on the general contract (alternates included) were: Haywood Contracting Co., Inc.. Lake Junaluska: $2,224,360; Hickory Construction Co. Inc.. Hickory, $2,365,220: M. B. Kahn Construction Co., Inc.. Dunn. $2,243,192; Laxton Construction Co., Inc.. Charlotte, $2,184,100; Metric Constructors Inc.. Charlotte. $2,239,400; Mid-South Construction Co., Inc.. Dunn. $2,336,700; Parke Construction Co., Charlotte. 2.316 million; Rodgers Builders Inc., Charlotte. $2,294,394; Romeo-Guest Associates. Greensboro. $2,286,801; Middlesex Construction Corp.. Charlotte, $2.231,500. Other plumbing bids, with alternates, were: Community Heating and Plumbing Co., Greensboro. $131,500: Moser inc.. Asheville. $160,400; P and H Service Inc.. Greensboro. $220,600; Hicks and Ingle Corp., Charlotte. $132,168.70; Plemmons Plumbing and Heating Inc., Waynesville. $141,200.
