  • WESTERN CAROLINIAN SPECIAL FALL ISSUE Security job has 'ups, downs' PAGE 15 To protect life and property, and to be of service to students are the duties of the WCU department of traffic and security, said Pritchard Smith, director of the department. AM the security officers have taken at least 160 hours of law enforcement courses, the officers are certified by the state attorney general, and have full power of arrest. Many of the officers said the biggest problems they have with students concern parking. However, the security department does not make parking policies, they merely enforce them. A traffic and security committee, composed of faculty and students, decide parking regulations. One officer said he "would like to build a bonfire and burn all the ticket books, but unfortunately parking regulations are necessary." Members of the security force are as follows: Pritchard Smith-director. Smith has been director eight years. He retired from the NC Highway Patrol as a lieutenant after 30 years of service. Smith is a graduate of the FBI academy in Washington, DC. ill "I feel I've helped a lot of students. I think we have an above average group of students." Darleen Wallace-secretary. She has held this position for one year. Her husband is a retired serviceman who is now a WCU student. Bill Bradley-with security eight months. Previously he was a trainee with the Jackson County sheriff's department the Jackson County Sheriff's department. "I like the job fine so far. I have been going to school and working at the same time, which can sometimes be rough." Ray Holder, Jr.-with security a year. Holder was previously employed by the Buncombe County Department of Corrections. Ed Hooper-with security six years. Hooper was previously a state patrolman in Cherokee County. "It's a fine job...it has its ups and downs." Bill McClure-with security four years. Now working on an associate degree in law enforcement, McClure was previously a tractor-trailer driyp'' we have a pretty good student body. It's got its aggravations, but by and large it's a pleasure to be a policeman here. Dave Bennett-with security six years. He has been an employee at Western for 25 years, and boasts that "I helped cut the right of way for the Tuckaseegee." His past jobs include farmhand, janitor, stockroom clerk, and mailman __ f "it s a good job. One gripe I have about the students is they don't seem to know we are certified and have the same power as any FBI agent, patrolman, or Sheriff's denntv "It's challenging and I like it. You get to meet new peopl "I really enjoy working up here. You get to know a lot of the students. One thing you need to do is get along with the students to gain their confidence." Jay Blackwell-with security two years. Re WorKing at security has been a pleasure. Of course, anything you get paid for is bound to have its headaches, or else they wouldn't pay you. I've gotten along with the students pretty well. Jess Shelton-with security six years. Before coming to Western, Shelton was security chief in Vietnam for KBRJ Construction Co., one of the world's largest construction companies. ^Lawrence Msner a month.
