  • THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 1977 Cats lose close game to Ga. So. Western Carolina's Catamounts were literally just a whistle awav from upsetting I Southern last Saturday night in Statcsbot. I But the whistle never blew and WCU wound up losing its second close game on the road in a row, 82-74. lhe Cats, although 7-14, continued to plav their best basketball of the season and had led more than 15 of the first 20 minutes in the game behind a 16-point first half bv forward Ike Minis. Georgia Southern came back early in the second half to erase WCl's seven point (43-36) halftinie lead and actually move into a five -point lead of ils Own before rolling out a four corner offense. "I'm sure Coach (LatTy) Chapman was surprised after he went to that four-corners and looked up to see we had taken the lead," said WCU Head Coach Fred Conley. And that was the case. Ilu- tats foiled the slowdown attempt by tying the score at 55 and then going ahead, but il was a crucial non-call by an official in the final minutes of the game that ended the upset bid. With 1:47 remaining and WCU three points back at 72-69, Southern's Kevin Anderson apparently charged over a WCU player on a breakaway attempt to make a basket. Both plavers crashed to the Boor across lhe baseline in lhe silence of no whistle and Southern had the five-point margin il needed to make its four-cornet offense effective. The Cats got their fourth consecutive superior game from Mims, who scored 20 points and got 13 rebounds before fouling oul with <>:lb to play. Forward George Dodkin added 1° points and il rebounds and guards .lav lassiter and Bubba Wilson each had 12 points and five rebounds. Western faced U I -Chalanooga last night on the road. The Cats will have the coming week off before returning home next Wednesday for a 7:30 p.m. game in Reid against arch-rival Appalachian State. The Catamounts and Mountaineers met in Boone just two weeks ago with ASU taking a deceptive 65-51 win. Western got into trouble early in that game, missing its first 14 shots and falling behind 14-4. But the game tightened by halftime as WCU closed to within two points. ASU didn't manage to put the game away until just over the three-minute mark when it scored three consecutive baskets. Forward Tony Searcy led the scoring in that first meeting for ASU with 20 points, while Ike Mims 14 and Bubba Wilson's 10 paced WCU. THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN STUDY GOD'S WORD at 10A.M.
