  • PAGE 2 \ THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN THURSDAY MAY 1, 1975 Visiting scholars present WCU lectures next week 'Strawberry' succeeds Distinguished scholars in philosophy, medical record administration, mathematics, history, and chemistry will present lectures here next week as part of the Western Carolina University Visiting Scholars Program. Each of the programs is free to the public. Dr. Eugene Long, chairman of the Department of Philosophy at the University of South Carolina, will speak May 6 at 8 p.m. in the Cherokee Room of Hinds University Center. Long is a specialist in religion and existentialism. His topic will be "Persons, Law, and Society." Mary E. Converse, director of the Central Office for International Classification of Diseases and research associate with the Hospital Research and Educational Trust of the American Hospital Association, will speak May 8 at 2 p.m. in the Grandroom of the University Center. A past president of the American Medical Record Association, Converse will speak on future developments in medical record systems and practices. Dr. Trevor Evans of Emory University will present a mathematics colloquium on "Latin Squares, Cubes, and o- ther Designs" May 8 at 4 p.m. in room 309 of Stillwell Science Building. The chairman of the Department of History at Duke University, Dr. Robert F. Dur- den, will lecture on "The Gray and the Black: The Confederacy and the Debate over the Use of Black Soldiers During the Civil War" May 8 at 8:30 p.m. in room 104 of Belk Building. US DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION Durden also will present a seminar on the history of the Duke family May 8 at 3 p.m. in the Catamount Room of the U.C. His latest book, a biography of the Duke family, is to be published soon by Duke University Press. On May 9 Dr. John A. Dean, professor ofchemistryat the University of Tennessee, will speak on "Flameless Methods in Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy" at 2 p.m. in room 336 of Stillwell. Dean is the author of numerous articles and books, the best-known of which — "Instrumental Methods of Analysis"—is now its fifth e- dition. The visiting scholars program is designed to provide students and others with opportunities to hear recognized leaders in a variety of academic disciplines. The program is coordinated by the office of academic affairs. (CPS)-Almost seven years after students occupied five buildings for a week of protests, Columbia University dedicated the gymnasium that ignited the confrontation-on a different scale. In April 1968, several hundred students occupied campus buildings to protest erection of the gymnasium on park land, and planned limited access to the building by local community residents. The students were eventually evicted in a massive and bloody pre-dawn police raid.
