Page 8 WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY TUESDAY FEBRUARY 18, 1975 'Best basketball of the season' QapcLitWiaM r hf*\|l*f s Ladies to peak for tournament "We are playing our best basketball of the season now," was coach Betty Westmoreland's assessment of Western Carolina University's women's basketball team follow ing a fine showing last weekend in the Winthrop College Invitational Tournament at Rock Hill, South Carolina. The Uady Cats defeated Fast Carolina, 81-69, and upset Tennesse, 86-82, before falling to the eventual tourney champion, the College of Charleston, 71-63, in the simifinal round. "It appears that we should peak just in time for the state tournament," said Westmoreland as she looked towards the NCAIAW tourney next week in Boone. Gymnasts split matches; women win, men lose WCU's gymnastics teams split their matches last weekend as the women's team won decis" ively and the men's team lost. Susan Bulloch compiled 31 individual points to win best all around honors for the seventh time this season and pace WCU's women to a 83-74 victory over the University o' Tennessee in a match at Maryville. The win was the sixth in seven meets for coach Susan Fields team. The men's team dropped a decision to the University of Georgia despite an outstanding performance by the Catamounts Mike Hartsell. Hartsell totaled 33 points and claimed best all around honors. Both WCU teams will meet Middle Tennessee State in Reid Gymnasium, Saturday. "The women's meet will begin at 10 a.m. with the men's meet scheduled for 6 p.m. The Lady Cats, now 9-7 for the season, have won seven of their last 10 games. Center Brenda Johnson burned the nets for 28 points in the win over ECU. She had plenty of help from Jolly Jones who tossed in 20 points. Johnson maintained her hot pace with 24 points in win over Tennessee. Brenda Halford scored 16 and Judy Stroud followed with 14 to pace the upset win. Johnson scored 17 while Halford and Stroud followed with 12 apiece in the loss to Charleston. The Lady Cats will play a make up game with Appalachian State Thursday in Boone before beginning preparation for the state tour. Main Waynesville 452-2313 Basketball team enters last 10 days of season Western Carolina University's basketball team enters the last ten days of its 1974-75 season with a good chance of becoming the first group of WCU cagers to post a winning record in the last three years. The Catamounts, 12-10 for the season, must win two of their remaining four games to accomplish this feat. Western will host Lenoir- Rhyne College in its last home game in Reid Gymnasium Wednesday night, LR dealt the Cats a 84-72 defeat in their first meeting at Hickory. The Catamounts will play their last three games of the season on the road within a four day period. The trip begins Saturday at Appalachian State in Boone, moves to Greenville Mondnyfor a home game with East Carolina and ends at UNC-Wilming- ton, Tuesday night. Coach Fred Conley says his team is ready for the stretch drive and is not discouraged by last week's losses to powerful Marquette and Toledo. "The players see the opportunity for a winning season and I am confident they can finish strong," said Conley. "It is going to be a challenge. Lenoir-Khyne beat us down there in December and here last season. Appalachian State and UNC-Wilmington are real tough on their home courts and East Carolina is one of the finer teams on our schedule," he added. Conley saw his team's five game win streak snapped last Tuesday by ninth ranked Marquette, 63-53, and then suffered a 101-73 setback at the hands of Toledo, a Mid-American Conference power. "We played very good defensive basketball at Marquette, but shot poorly. 01 STERN WEAR OFF ON ^ Gm •LEATHER JACmg \srf&!
