And a basketball player without confidence is Ln about the same shape. Western Carolina University has such a player. Greg Wittman is Western's next superstar. He's been a- round three years and has never particularly distinguished him self for one reason. , .and one reason only. He hasn't had the confidence in himself Uiat it takes to become an outstanding basketball player. Greg has been good, sometimes very good, but he hasn't had that extra something that puts a basketball player in Hen ry Logan's class. Very few of them do. But Wittman has something going for him that most other would-be basketeers don't, , . a world of ability. And the confidence is coming ... in fact it's almost evident Uiat Whittman, after three years, finally believes he can do the job, and do it well, for Jim Gudger's Catamounts, Gudger agrees that the only thing needed for Wittman to become Western's next super star is confidence. "Greg is one of the finest big men (6-8) ability-wise that I've ever been associated with. But his lack of confidence in himself is the trouble. He just doesn't believe in himself enough to really play well," Gudger said, "He has a very difficult time in doing the easy thing, Greg can really make Uie tough moves but has much trouble in making the easy one. For example, he has one of Uie best hook shots in the business but instead of taking an easy hook he backs away, spins and shoots a jumpter. "Greg should be a forward. He's an excellent shot, moves well and handles Uie ball to suit me. If Paul Litz continues to improve it looks like wo'll move Wittman to a forward post next year, "I think Wittman is a pro prospect if he gains Uie necessary confidence," said Gudger while chomping down on a cigar butt after the Appalachian game last Wednesday, Wittman feels like he's improving and ready to take over the leadership at Western when the great All-American Henry Logan departs. "I think I'm doing my job and certainly making a contribution. I'm beginning to see where maybe I can play just as well as the next man, maybe a little better . . . and it's really helping. "My best game, I guess, was against Appalachian at Boone, I scored 27 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. But I think I can play better," Greg said. Who will take up the slack next year when I,ogan isn't around? "I'm going to try. Of course, everyone will have to play better without Henry because it will be hard to replace that 35 points. But we'll make a good try and I sure hope that I can help. ' 'But the most important thing is now. We need to win the rest of our games and move on in to the Carolinas Conference tournament where I think we have agood chance if we play well," Wittmanadded, This season in 21 games, Greg has scored 16.4 points per contest and has speared 14,5 rebounds. In the three years, Wittman's worst shooting percentage from the field is 46.8 and this year he's shooting ac a 49.5 clip. Mark it down, Greg Wittman is Western Carolina's next superstar . . . if he will just believe in himself. Unofficially, Henry Logan took over the National small college scoring lead here Sat. night, pouring in 58 points in Western Carolina's 103-73 Carolinas Conference victory over Elon. A standing room crowd of 4,300 in Reid Gymnasium saw Logan push his season scoring average to 36.4 points pier game. In the latest NAIA statistics, Willie Scott of Alabama State led the nation with 36.1 average. The victory was Western's fourth in a row-in which Logan has averaged 51.5 points-and was the Catamounts' 11th in their last 12 games. Logan missed three shots late in the game that would have tied his own conference game scoring record of 60, but he did erase the conference season scoring mark of 823 points set last year by Guilford's Bob Kauffman. Logan now has scored 872 points in 24 games. He still has two regular season games to play- at Presbyterian next Wednesday and against Newberry here next Saturday, and then, of course, the tournament, All the points he scores in tournament play will count towards his record, Logan has scored 206 points in Western's last four games. This game began slowly with Elon playing for the better shots, and consequently, more than 2 1/2 minutes elapsed before Western scored a point. Soon Western held a 30-17 advantage and Elon didn't get close again. At halftime, Western held a 46-31 lead, and Logan had matched Elon point for point, He had 31. Western's team play was excellent all the while the Catamounts were breaking the game open. And Greg Wittman and Bob Thompson commanded the boards. But the Catamounts by that time had the game safely tucked away. Western's record is now 17-7 and 11-5 in the league, Elon is 12-13 and 7-10. Three other Western players scored in double figures. Wittman and Sam Sapp 13 each and Thompson 10, Hsnry Goedeck of Elon hit 16. of its kind in the United States and at Duke University with Dr. Rhine, the toremosi au thority on ESP who now has an independent institute for parapsychology in Durham, N.C.
