  • THURSDAY JANUARY 9, 1975 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 5 Major changes due Major changes are taking nlace in Western Carolina University's chief academic posts. Four of the five schools will apparently receive new deans before the year is completed. Both Dr. Taft B. Botner, dean of the School of Education and Psychology, and Dr. Maurice B. Morrill, dean of the graduate school have announced their retirements effective June 30. A new Business School dean, Dr. Algin B. King, has just assumed his duties here. Dr. John F. Bergher, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Services, will be the only familiar face among the school heads. Meanwhile, Dr. John McCrone, currently associate vice-president for educational development and research at Iowa University, is to be recommended to the Board of Governors this week to become the dean of the School of Arts and Sciences. The Arts and Sciences post has been filled by two different men in an "acting status since Dr. J. Gerald Eller resigned two years ago. McCrone is a biologist, whose special area of research has been with the toxins of spiders. Previously, he was associate dean of the graduate school and director of research at the University of the Pacific. He received his doctorate from the University of Florida, where he has also taught. The governors could reject McCrone, but that is considered unlikely by faculty members questioned here. If approved, he will replace Dr. James Dooley, who has been acting dean for the school for about 18 months. The search for the dean is probably the longest ever at Western, having started soon after Eller resigned. Botner, who has headed the School of Education and Psychology since 1968, joined WCU in 1950. He succeeded Dr. Dr. Taft Botner Carl D. Killian as dean of that school. The 64-year-old Botner, a Kentucky native, received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees at the University of Kentucky. * Morrill became the first dean of the Graduate School in 1967 and also joined the faculty here in 1950. He became director of the Graduate Division in 1965 and moved up to dean when the school was created. He received his bachelor and master's degrees from the University of Vermont and his doctorate from Columbia University. In 1960 he became a member of the Near East FonnHatinn and established an agricultural school at Ahwaz, Iran. He spent two years there, and a building at the school is named in his honor. Two search committees have been formed to find replacements for the two men. Dr. Eugene E. McDowell, head of the Department of Psychology, is heading a committee to replace Botner. Dr. James Wilson, associate professor of administration and school personnel, is chairman of the advisory committee searching for Morrill's successor. Welcome Back to Cullowhee?
