'Spellbound' .... FROM Page 1 ceeds. His genius, one that compels suspension of disbelief, does so not in intellectual terms, but in terms of the heart. It is amazing that audiences over the years have fancied Hitchcock for his thriller plots, which are so weak. The man's true brilliance lies in the meaningful nuance, the lifted evebrow, the critical telltale gesture that makes for real characterization. The characterization in "Spellbound" o- vercomes the melodramatic plot, the heart overcomes the head, two normal people emerge from an unreal labyrinth, and the master tight-rope artist, having constantly riskedabsur- dity, reaches safety. And that is the circus magic we still desire as movie-gE>ers, a magic "Spellbound" has.
