  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday February 22, 1973 page 3 Art Objects Being Made For Ball Members of Art Education II classes at WCU are creating table decorations for the North Carolina Art Society's Beaux- Arts Ball, to be held Saturday, Feb. 24 at the Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst. Dr. Perry Kelly, head of the WCU Art Department, said that he volunteered to have the students make the decorations for the ball. About thirty juniors and seniors, most of whom are not art majors, are participating. This Art Education coarse offers experience in construc ting three-dimensional designs, toys, and games suitable for use in teaching children. The centerpieces, to be surrounded by green and gold candles, are three-dimensional designs based on the works of famous artists. Some designs are transposed, while others are copies of the originals, One centerpiece, constructed by Jerry Huffman, junior art major from Conover, is a copy of Brancusi's "Fish" (originally done in marble in 1930). The design is of papier-maohe placed on a wooden base and sprayed with silver acrylic paint. Huffman said that two technological problems confronting him were trying to keep a smooth design and filling in holes and gaps, Huffman spent approximately twelve hours constructing the work. Ms Rebekah Huggins of Brevard, a major in Special Education, constructed a ram painted in blue and white. She said she spent a great deal of time on the project, and feels that the course will be of prac tical help to her in her teaching career. Ron Ennis, a junior Art Education major from S\anley, designed a copy of Picasso's bronze "Goat." The Goat, made of wire, masking tape, glue, cardboard, and papier-mache, stands on a wooden base. Ennis achieved a rustic appearance for his goat by rubbing in black paint. He used gold spray acrylic paint and sand to give it a rough metallic finish. Ennis estimated twenty- five hours spent, on his work. Grin. todf pizzas: l.£5 I.50-2.Z5 tfw fans!Brewing Company 0/vwnft:.. d.
