  • Pa9e 3 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Tuesday September 26, 1972 Defense Stuns Citadel Coach Bob Waters characterized the 10-0 shellacking of the Citadel Saturday night as the Catamounts' weakest performance en route to the present 3-0, undefeated slate. It's a good sign when you can play below par and still win, especially against a good team like the Citadel," commented the former Presbyterian and NFL signal caller. Despite numerous technical errors, Waters saw more plus- ses than minuses. "We still have avoided the big mistakes, having fumbled a total of only 3 times, and having had only 3 passes intercepted in the 3 games to daie. There is more to this than good luck," adds Waters. The defense, which was responsible for the Citadel being shut out for the first time in six years, has the normally sedate Waters beaming. "We knew we would be in good shape at linebacker, and in the defensive backfield. What we didn't know though, was how the lack of experience at the contain positions (Greg Whiteside and Kenny Lynch at strong end, Rod Hurlong and Keith Cor- bin at quick end) and mover (Gary Bruns and Scotty Orr) would effect us," points out Waters. Rookie and veteran alike were at optimum level against the Citadel, which comingoffof last year's fourth national ranking in NCAA College Division total offense had averaged over 400 yards in splitting their first two encounters. Steve Yates, who accounted for 12 solo and nine assisted tackles, spearheaded a determined Catamount charge involving the new players and vets Joe Hunter, Mike Cater, Keith Gosnell, Mike Sharp, Mark Callis, Alan Stub- •blefield, and . David Rathburn. Although Coach Waters characterized the offense as sporadic, he was pleased by the Catamounts' ability to move on the ground, where they picked up 226 yeards. "We blocked well in toe second half, and David Hackett (104 yards) and Jeff Kerwin (64 yards) had outstanding days running. "They were looking for us to pass and therefore used double coverage. So when our pass protection broke down in the first quarter we decided to give them our best from the ground," said Waters, who saw his charges gain only 79 yards through the air, as opposed to about 350 per contest previously this year. 79 yards turned out to be enough though, especially when considering that the Cats allocated the favored Bulldogs not a single completion, and ZERO' Steve Yates' super effort earned him the WCU coaches award as the outstanding defensive player of the game. Cats Drag In CC. Opening • The Western Carolina cross country team made a rather in- inauspicious 1972 debut in the Stone Mountain Invitation, held in Georgia Saturday morning. The Catamounts finished eighth in a field of 18 with 269 points, ahead of the Citadel (282), but behind such schools as Berry (129), Cumberland (187), and Georgia State (201). Baptist College of Charleston was low team (43), followed by Florida (60), and the 1971 winner, Georgia TechOl). Western Carolina finished second last year behind the strength of Ben Bailey and Terry Helms, who have both since departed. Mike Frozialeck was the high finisher for Western at 26 minutes and 42 seconds, good for 33rd place. Jim Smith finished 50th, Bill Barfield 53rd, Randy Helderman 62nd, and Gary Str oud 71st, to comprise the Catamount scorers. All except Helderman ran personal fasts.
