  • Cfte OTesfem Carolinian I Oil E OF THE STUDENTS VOL. XXXVII, No 43 Thursday, March 30, 1972 Western Carolina University Cullowhee, N.C. Southern Conference, NCAA await WCU Artist's Conception of New Stadium New stadium construction in first stages li\ JIM UOWKU. Associate Editor The athletic program at Western Carolina University took a formidable, pro ■ grcssive step yesterday when the University's I''aculty Athletic Committee voted unanimously to formally apply for membership in the Southern Conference. The action was prompted by a strong internal movement within the Southern Conference itself to accept Western Carolina. Three member colleges and universities have already voiced their approval public-ally (Last Carolina, Appalachian State and The Citadel), and the support seems to be spearheaded bv l-Uist Carolina University President Leo Jenkins and Appalachian State University Athletic Director Roj Clogston. WCU Athletic Director Bob Waters took the inatitive in proposing the formal application to the faculty committee by remarking that "from the indications I have received, this is the time for us to apply." Waters explained that the application is only the first step, and Western Carolina's acceptance is contingent on a CONTINUED ON Page 8. . . . Campus wash service may be discontinued Western Carolina's laundry may be washed up. A rumor has been circulated to the effect that during Executive session of the last Board of Trustees meeting, Vice- President for Business Affairs, Doyle Dillard recommended that the university = operated laundry service be discontinued. Dillard did not confirm the rumor but did not say he had not made the recommendation. What he did say, is effect, was even if he had made such a recommendation, nothing could have been done about it since there was not a quorum of trustees at the meeting. Dillard went on to say that he has been concerned about the operation of the laundry service since he came to Western Carolina. He said discussion concerning the problem had been going on for "quite some time." If the laundry is not closed, Dillard implied, something will have to be done to alleviate some problems. He noted that for the past several years the laundry has lost money, and since it is an auxiliary service of the university it receives no finances for the state. He also said laundry needs have changed since the laundry was established. More students are going home on weekends, because there are more cars, and they are having their laundry done in their homes. The machinery is old and needs repairing or replacing, Dillard said. He was concerned aBout the mandatory laundry fee, that possibly it should be done away with. Dillard also said, though, that the recent fee adjustment "was too little and too late," to be of any great help to the laundry's financial problem. Dillard pointed out, though, that 75% of the students that live in the residence halls use the laundry, but that this could be because of the mandatory fee. Information uncovered in fund misuse A student Senate committee investigating Student Government Productions yesterday- turned up information suggesting that this arm of the executive branch of S.G.A. is not operating as it was meant to. The committee, chaired by Rob Parker, learned that the Director of Student Government Productions, Doug Arnold has been receiving 5 per cent of the total revenue from ticket sales for the concerts. It is estimated that Arnold, thus far, has made overone thousand dollars. Arnold, who was supposed to appear to testify, did not, and was unavailable for comment, The senate committee heard testimony to the effect that a Student Government Productions Committee was established in 1971 that evolved, not necessarily through proper chan- els, to become the present Student Government Productions. Former co-chairman of the Productions Committee, Marc Pruett, told the investigators of the committee's attempted organization. CONTINUED ON Page 8 , . . . Cheating charges set against WCU net star WCU basketball star Howard Winston is in trouble. Attorney General David Harling has filed charges against Winston for cheating and unseemly conduct. Harling said that Winston was charged with violating item three in the Code of Behavior, Regulations' and Judicial System, "Falsely assuring a teacher that an assignment has been faithfully carried out." Winston was charged because he was reported to have turned in a false make-up exam. He missed an announced exam Winter Quarter, and when he took the make-up, it is charged that he turned in a Blue Book with the answers for the class exam rather than the answers for the make-up. Dr. Nancy Joyner of the Department of English turned in Winston to the Department Chairman, Dr. Philip Wade, who forwarded Dr. Joyner's letter, a copy of the two exams and a copy of Winston's Blue Book to Harling. The Attorney General reported that the maximum sentence for such an offense is from one to 60 work hour, citizenship probation for 0 to 6 quarters or suspension for 2 to 6 quarters. He said he had a strongcase, but had not made up his mind whether or not he would ask for a maximum penalty. Harling said he had had no pressure placed on him because of the case, and when asked if he expected pressure from the athletic office, or anyone else, he said "I do not." Public Defender, DwightNelson, said that Winston has not contacted him as of yet concerning his defense. The case is due to come up in Superior Court on April 10. WCU students picked up in drug bust Three W.C.U. students were arrested yesterday for possession of drugs, Sandra Faye Bradshaw, Barry Ridley and Susan Whi- tenton were arrested by Prit- chard Smith at 2:10 p.m. at a trailer in Tuckaseigee. In the trailor 17 packets of marijuana each containing from two to 20 grams were supposedly found. CONTINUED ON Page 8 . . . .
