  • Thursday, March 30, 1972 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 7 Rain delays return of WCU golf team VOl GOTTA START SOMKWIIKRK-The WCL' sprint medley team was a weak area of last year's track team, but times have changed. VViih Clarence Thomas (right) and Roy Bryan (left) running with some fine times the team won the consolation division of the Florida Relays last week with a record time for WCU— 3:25,7. Bryan had a 21.9 time in the 220 and Thomas turned in a 48.8 time in the 1,4 mile. WCU athletes honored Jimmy Laughridge heads a list of ten Western Carolina Cniversity athletes that were recently selected as OCT- STANDING COLLEGE ATHLETES OF AMERICA. Laughridge, an NAIA District 6 all=star performer in both football and baseball, was chosen as a member of the OCT— STANDING COLLEGE ATHLETES OF AMERICA Hall of Fame, the first WCC athlete to receive this honor. The nine others chosen were football players Jim Dougherty, Tony Ashley and All^America Steve Williams; track and field stars Terry Helms and Jerry Gaines; All-South soccer player Patrick Cheung; all-district basketball star Howard Winston; wrestler Merrill "Bo'' Russell; and baseball standout led Whitworth. Announcement of their selection was made by the Board of Advisors of OUTSTANDING COLLEGE ATHLETES OF A- MERICA, an annual awards volume published to honor America's finest college athletes. Coaches and athletic directors from individual colleges and universities across the nation nominated the winning athletes on the basis of their displayed abilities not only in athletics but also in community service and campus activities. Other criteria for those selected for OUTSTANDING COLLEGE ATHLETES OF AMERICA included strength of character, leadership both on and off the playing field , and scholarship. In congratulating the athletes selectedt Head Football Coach Bill Battle of the Cniversity of Tennessee pointed out that " their selection is based on qualities of leadership and character in addition to the competitive drive and determination necessary for being a winnerin the arena. These are vital ingredients for sic- cess in life after college." Star Running Back (.ale Sayers of the Chicago Bears said this year's Outstanding College Athlete winners have ''set goals for themselves to be the best in the field. They will fight with all they can to achieve success, and with this determination they will surely atuiin it," The program's Board of Advisors is chaired by James Jeffrey, executive director, Fellowship of Christian Athletes. ?P*\ if^ tffii L vjfcb Jin'. Jeff TeaKuc and Thorn lane head the Catamount golfers, as each has two years of district competition. \llhough not veterans of the WCl golf team, Tony Green and Sammy Nichols finished among the top contenders in the K \ Open last year at High Hampton and promise to be a plus for this year's team. Green, an honest golfer, look first place, but disqualified himself when he discovered he had played the wrong ball. Thus far in practice Green, Kegon Jones, and Ume are the three lop scorers Lo qualify. Jones, a freshman, will be a great asset to the Catamounts in the future. Coach Don Uillon, ihe rookie golf mentor, said that he ex pects to carry eight or nine players on the team. Uillon is having a lough time picking his last two men. Joe Shropshire, Steve Hodge and Man IXidleck, all freshmen, are currently balding for the two Slots, Hounding out the roster arc Bu//v Uorrall and VnoldCor- rell. Besides the tough Clemson Tigers, WCU will have lo lace Ivvo other colleges at the match, Uillon said that the NAIA District Meet will be May 8-9 at Furnrin. Mlhough Western will be trying to win all their meets, the won lost record has no bearing on the District Meet. All NAIA District (i teams will qualify for the meet. Miking no speculations on his team, Uilton smiled and said, "If it doesn't rain, we'll be out there." lee-off time for all matches Will be 1:00 CM, I Jogger's mile A novel event has been added to Friday's Western Carolina Relays. It is called the "Jogger's Mile" and will give those not participating in the meet a chance to get in on the competition. The event is open to anyone twenty five years and over. To win, one has only to estimate the time it will teke him to jog, or run if you wish, four times around the track and then cross the finish line in the time he estimated. The participant who mostac- curatelv predicts his time wins. The "Jogger's Mile" will be "run" at approximately 3:20 p.m. All interested participants should report to WCU track coach Roger Thomas at the track Friday afternoon.
