  • Thursday, January 20, 1972 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 7 Cats downs Allen 65-59, face Mars Hill Saturday The Western Carolina I ni- versity Catamount Basketball team took a 65 to 59 win over Allen University on the road in Columbia to climb bacK into ih: win column with eight wins against seven losses. The Cats will now return to the warm confines of Reid gym Saturday to play host to the Mars Hill Lions in the first game of a five game home stand which will feature Baptist College on the 25th, Oglethorpe on the 27th, Elon on the 29th, and Appalachian on the 31st, The Catamounts came out shooting hot against Allen and .•an up a quick 7-0 lead. V- len recovered and /ought back to come within two, 20-18 with ten .-ninnies left in the first half of action. Western got the hot Stand again and quickly ran up a ten point lead with seven minutes left in the half behind the sharp shooting of Rick Campbell and the rebounding of Wilson Scott. Campbell had 12 points in the first half. The Cats missed seven srraight shots that permitted rough playing Allen to tie the game witn i> seconds in the half. Scott's 20-footer at the buzzer gave Western their two point halftime lead of 35-33. Allen came out in the second half to hit their first three shots to take a 39 to 36 lead before the Cats could find their range, Campbell hit two free throws with 16:42 left in the game to put the Catamounts back on top, and they ne\er trailed again, Coach Jim Hartbarger put Western Into their four corner offense to protect the lead. Their rebounding and scoring in the second half were poor though Campbell finished the game with 23 points. Scott was the leading rebounder with 14, "This is the most physical game that we have been in siice 1 havi been coach here," said Hartbarger. Mars Hill, the first of five home games in the next ten days for WCU, is a very important District 6 encounter for both teams. WILSON SCOTT, WHO LIKE teammate Rick Campbell below, had a knee operation last year, hasbegun to re-gain the style that kept Western fans excited last season. Mars Hill has a record of 2-0 in the district and 6-10 overall while the Cats are undefeated in the district with a 2-0 record and an overall 8-7, The Cats have won four straight since the new jear began. The Liana, coached by Jack Litton who is in his second year as coach at Mars Hill, gave Western many problems before the Cats were able to subdue them last year. They play a fine style of offensive basketball and have a strong defense. Mars Hill seems better tha.i their 6-10 record indicate s. Their record would likely be better if they had not had an Injury to 6-foot-4 sophomore forward Jerry Hayes, who was leading the district in scoring before he was sidelined for 4 games. Hayes is now averaging 22.2 points per gamo and presenuy holds second place in the district. WCT fans can look forward to next Tuesday night here a- gainst Baptist College when David Smith, the All-Amerlcan transfer, will see his first action for Western Carolina. Everyone is hoping that he will live up to his billing, (including Smith himself). WHEN RICK CAMPBELL is on the court some folks think his scholarship might be from Johnson & Johnson, but in spite of the bandages that hide the scars from last year's Knee surgery Campbell has given the Cats a big lift with 61 points in WCC's last three games.
