Thursday, October 28, 1971 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN 11 Flying Fleet rips Cats 5-2, wins district playoff berth Tuesday afternoon, at Due West, S.C., the Western Caro- lina soccer team succumbed to powerful barrage by Erskine's Flying Fleet, 5-2, to tally their second loss of the season and lose their berth in the District 5 playoffs. The Catamount booters scored the opening goal of th2 game 5:40 into the first period when Flying Fleet fullback, Phil Junker attempted to thwart a Catamount offensive driveo Junker's pass to his own goalie went off target and into Ers- kin's goal. WCU's Patrick Chaung was awarded the score,, Then, Erskine's leading scorer, Kiki Ojeda, from Costa Rica, rapped in a goal on an assist by Mario Suarez 12:15 later to knot the first period scoring at 1-1, The tie was broken in the second quarter as Ojeda set up Charles Mc-G'nty to give Erskine a 2-1 halftime edge, WCU's Mike Michner again knotted the score at the opening of the third period of Play on an assist from Tommy Lane, but Erskine rallied is Ojeda fired the ball into ths nets w;th minor assistance from Van Taylor for a 12 ead. Then in the final period of Play, the Flying Fleet put the game on <ce with 5:05 gone when Suarez made his second assist of the game, this time to McGintyo The goal gave Erskine a 4-2 edge. Finally, on his third goal of the day, Ojeda scored unas - sisted to push the match well out of reach, Tuesday's loss gives WCU a 6-2 record, while extending Er ■ skine's record to 7 -1, Western Carolina will go to field again Saturday atCiemson University against the Clemson Tigers, the team responsible for Erskine's single season defeat, "Erskine simply outhustled us," commented soccer coach Charles Schrader, "We just couldn't get the ball and without the ball you can't expect to score-" HE STOPPED IT AGAIN. . .and again and again. That was the story Tuesday afternoon as the goalie of Erskine's Flying Fleet all but stopped everything the Catamount booters could kick at him, Erskine went on to win, 5-2. NEBRASKA Shoemaker wins with two misses as Chambers ends losing streak If you took all the dill pick= les eaten in America in a month and laid them end to and. . .people would think you were some kind of a nut, Well, the Fearless Forcasters don't dabble in dill pickles, but if you proclaim that the four, or any one of the four will have the best record over the best of the Greater Cullowhee Football Contest entrants, you will have people thinking the same thing. They were dazzled again. This week's winner, Jim Shoemaker, outclassed the entire Fearless crew (so, what else is new?}. Shoemaker missed only two games which hurled him into a neato tie with Richard Rosenburg, who also missed two. °n the tie breaker, both Shoemaker and Rosenburg missed the actual 24 points by a bundle; Rosenburg predicted 49 and Shoemaker 40. So, it will be Shoemaker's $5.00 and goodies this week. This hardie. week's contest is a The rules and prizes remain the same. As an example of just how poorly the F.F.'s did this week, consider the winner, Dr. Gur- ~ney Chambers. He led the crew with ten wins and four losses last week. Coach Bob Waters also had ten wins and four losses, but was awarded second place since the Cats los! to Livingston. Steve White and Jungle Jim finished in a tie for last place with five losses each. Wiite, who came to WCU from Florida, reportedly picked lemons there too. Jungle is said to have left town for C.J, Harris Hospital in Sylva. His wife said that Jungle owned a dog with an ingrown tail and had to have him x-rayed to see if he was happy. Dr. Chambers declined to write in the winners spot this week, but made one comment which he said would suffice, "I could win any time 1 want to, bu;, when one is a Ph, D, one must not try to constantly make leasers feel inferior," Contrary to rumor, should he to win the name of the prognosticates will not be changed to Gurney's Guessers or Chambers Choosers.
