  • THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN, October 22, 1970 7 WCU soccer team having big season by Frank Wyatt This Friday, the Western Carolina booters meet UNC— AsheviUe in a rematch. The first time they met, WCU walked away with a 6-0 victory. The Cat kickers fell in their season opener with Clemson 2-1. Then the team moved on for three victories on the road at Furman (3-2), UNC-A (6-0), and Carson-Newman (5-2) for their present record of 3-1. Friday's game with UNC—A may, however, prove to be more difficult, since two of UNC-A's starters are back in action. FoUowing the rematch with UNC-A, Coach Schrader's boot- ers wiU meet the undefeated Flying Fleet from Erskine on the WCU field on Monday, Oct 26. Last year's match with Erskine resulted in a WCU de= feat, 7»2. This year's game wUl be Western's greatest confrontation in its short soccer history. Leading Erskine's tough offense wiU be two of the South's premier scorers, Charles McGinty, the nation's leading scorer in 1969 when he scored 46 goals in 12 games; and Kiki Ojeda, the top junior coUege scorer at Miami Dade Junior College last season. The starting WCU offense is led by HendersOnvUle's Mike Michner, a transfer from Brevard College. He leads in team scoring with 9 goals so far this season. Playing opposite Michner at the right inside position is Harry Foley, coming from South Eastern Community Col- liege. He is second in scoring for WCU with 6 goals. 'Ihe left and right wing positions are filled by senior. Ken Cassell from Greensboro, N.C. and junior, IXick Thomas, a former football player from Thomasville, N.C. This is the first season for both players. Supporting the offense and defense in the left and right half- back slots are last year's veterans, Tommy Lane, a junior from Spindale, N.C. on the right and Charlotte sophomore, Don Mincy on the left Center halfback is played by the phenomenal Patrick Cheung, who has already gained the distinction of being the only fresh= man starter. The defensive line is covered by seniors Ken Marshburn and Ed Prescott along with junior, Ralph Lundy. Mike Clement plays in the goalie's position. This year's managers are Larry J. Arnold and Larry |B. Rhodes. Should the Catamount booters defeat the Flying Fleet, it would set them into soccer prominence far ahead of schedule, Fall baseball — good Fall baseball practice ended Wednesday afternoon with Coach Bill Haywood sporting an optimistic smile. "If we can get through the winter without losing anybody on grades and can take up in the spring where we left off, I feel we can have a real fine club capable of winning twenty or more games," Haywood explained. Fifty -seven prospects originally reported for the beginning of fall practice four weeks ago. The squad has been cut to less than half that number now as the Catamount basebal- lers prepare to face the toughest schedule ever attempted in WCU history. Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, South Carolina, Georgia, Furman, the Citadel, Georgia Southern and VMI are eight of the teams the Cats will tangle with on the 29 game schedule. Last Saturday, Coach Haywood took a long look at his team under game conditions as they played an intra-squad game. Haywood, a former pitcher for the Washington Sena= tors and manager in their system during the summer months, was pleased with the performance of his young pitching staff during the fall. For the first time, it appears the Catamounts wUl have an ample supply of dependable hurlers. Noland Smathers is the only senior thrower and along with juniors Wayne McCauley, a very promising transfer, and Larry Goodwin wUl supply needed experience. Sophomores Glen Glover and Ed Hall drew praise from Haywood and he was impressed with freshmen Don Bright and Mike Gambill. HaU and Gambill are the only lefthanders. Several veterans appear to have improved. Leading this group are hard hitting catcher Ted Whitworth, hot corner ace Bruce West and shortstop Jim Grove. Senior Mickey Hicks looked good as he moved over to second base and junior Jim Mc Elroy was tough behind the plate. Ronnie Tanner, a freshman who played both third and the outfield, was the most impressive of the newcomers. The '71 season opens March 20 at South Carolina , which is the first of a seven game read trip. rf.STE/?j|> Ted Whitworth PROFESSIONAL DRUG STORE BRAND NAME COSMETICS Prince Matchabelli Lanvin Faberge English Leather Jade East British Sterling 1 NATIONALLY ADVERTIZED DRUGS Main Street Sylva, N.C. 1970 Soccer Team Sitting, left to right - Jerry Smart, Cecil Lee, Patrick Cheung, Bill Barfield, Ken Martin, Phil Burriss, David Alvarez, and Mike Clement Kneeling, left to right - Gary Rhodes, Gene Laughridge, Dave Lindsay, Ken Cassell, Harry Foley, Ed Prescott, John Baker, Ken Marshburn.
