International office for students to be started The first step toward the establishment of an Office for International Students was taken on July 20, 1970, when the Office of the Assistant Dean of Men accepted the duties of the advisement and counseling of all International Students. AH areas of concern to International Students are now channeled through this office, from visa forms prior to their leaving home to their housing and activities while on campus. Through this consonuaiea function it is hoped the new International Students will gain a quicker understanding of American customs, University regulation s, and will thus be able to overcome the problems that are often found on a university campus. Robert Ct Dawson, Assistant Dean of Men and International Student Advisor is asking for suggestions to aid him in his role. Transfers given rooms The twenty-six female transfer students who were assigned temporary living quarters in High Rise study rooms were all given dorm rooms by Wednesday, September 23 at 5:00 p.m. Additional space was acquired when former dorm students did not return to campus by Wednesday at 12 noon. These students had not previously notified the Housing office of their cancellations. Thus, their rooms were relinquished at that time. The lack of dorm space at the beginning of the quarter was ap parently due to only a 12% cancellation of room reservations rather than the average 20% in years past, No transfer students cancelled their room reservations In the month of August which, in the past, has been a rather full month for cancellations. James Barnwell, Director of the Housing Office, reports there are approximately 1600 male and 1600 female students housed on campus this quarter. There are approximately 2000 more students living off-campus. TO ALL MALE STUDENTS an open letter from The President of the Interfraternity Council. On behalf of the Interfraternity Council of Western Carol- \ ina University, I would like to welcome you back to Cullowhee. This Monday, October 5th, marks the beginning of FaU Quarter rush. Rush Week will begin with the U.C. smoker. The smoker will be held at 8:00 p.m., Monday night, in the Grandroom of the University Center. There will be a rush registration fee of $2.00 charged to each prospective rushee. All non-Greek males who have accumulated 12 quarter hours or more at WCU are eligible to attend rush. For those of you who are Freshmen or transfer students, I would like to extend to you a special welcome. I hope that you will enjoy your college years here at WCU and some time during your stay, consider becoming a fraternity man. We will be looking forward to meeting all of you next quarter. Thank you very much for your consideration. If I can be j of any assistance to any of you, contact me through the Assist- | ant Dean of Men or In person on campus.
