  • Thursday, September 25,1969 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 13 Jim Hamilton Strives For Better Athletics When Dr. Jim Hamilton has a spare moment this year, probably he will spend it working on a study of athletic grants- in-aid among some 540 colleges and universities across the nation. ..Or working with the Board of Directiors of the U, S. Olympic Committee. ...Or, awarding a championship trophy In some place such as Billings, Montana, Hamilton, 47, head of the Department of Health and Physical Education at Western Carolina University, also is president of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) for 1969-70. NAIA Growth The NAIA began in 1938, when basketball teams from eight colleges competed for a basketball championship intended to replace the A.A, U National Championships, which were moved from Kansas City to Denver that year. The association was formed to give colleges and universities of small or moderate enrollment an opportunity to compete athletically against similar institutions on a national basis, (An indication of NAIA growth is the fact that members today range from institutions with a few hundred students to those with as many as 20,000 students.) From the modest beginning In 1938, the NAIA has expanded to the extent that some 68,000 athletes competed for NAIA championships in 16 different sports in 1968-69. Since becoming president In March, Hamilton already has jetted to the national offices in Kansas City several times, and to Chicago, New York, Las Vegas, and many other cities, on official business. Athletic Conduct As president, Hamilton is the presiding officer at meetings of the NAIA executive committee, the NAIA representative at meetings where the association Is a participant, and the No. 1 spectator at many NAIA championships as a working man's schedule will permit. But Hamilton does not speak of executive committee meetings and trophy tresentatlons when the conversation turns to the NAIA presidency. He emphasizes current problems in athletics and solutions to the problems sought by NAIA research committees, "The conduct of coaches, athletes, officials, and particularly audiences at athletic contests throughout the entire country, has become detrimental to the high standards of sportsmanship," Hamilton says. He sees the trend as a major problem for NAIA members. "It is not unusual for flayers, coaches, and officials to be abused during a game. This practice has no place in a program that is designed to impart to the participants the character we prize," he says. "For most of us, these are actions we dont accept, and to subject ourselves to this type of action, and to condone it, and allow it, has an adverse effect of those who participate. They come to feel that to lie, cheat, and steal is all right" Guidelines From the NAIA "Conduct of Athletics" program have come guidelines that would place athletics on a higher ethical level through involvement of the total college or university community. Under the program, NAIA members are encouraged to Implement the guidelines within their athletic situation, rhey would be treated as guests with fair and Impartial treatment from players, coaches, and spectators," Hamilton says. Also In the making Is a study by a NAIA research committee of athletic grants in-aid practices among member institutions. "It will be an attempt to limit the practice of giving remuneration to athletes beyond the educational expenses of the college," according to Hamilton. New Proposals The NAIA also is currently studying a proposal to establish two levels of competition In football. Hamilton says this plan would allow the institution that does not heavily subsidize athletics to compete with institutions of a similar nature. Each school could choose Its level of competition. At the helm of the NAIA this year, Hamilton brings a steady hand and a rich background of experience to the post, A native of Weir, Kansas, he attended Pittsburgh State College in Kansas where he received All America recognition Peabodv College. Hamilton coached freshmen basketball teams at INC for three years, and was head basketball coach at Lenoir-Rhyne College. Before he joined the WCU organization as physical education head in 1966, he held COACH JIM 1AMILTON during the next four years. as a basketball player. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of North Carolina following a World War n hitch in the Navy, and received his doctor's degree from George similar posts at Lenolr-Rhyne and High Point colleges, Hamilton is a member of the U.
