  • Tuesday, September 24, 1968 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN PageU Cats Drop Grid Opener To Strong C-N, 24-7 By JIM ROWELL Using a potent aerial attack, the Car son-Newman Eagles bypassed most of the Western Carolina defense to post a 24-7 win over the Catamounts Saturday night In the penalty marred contest, the Cats' lone score was set up when they recovered a fumV led punt on the Eagles' nine yard line mid-way through the final period. After grinding their way down to the Eagle three, Quarterback Don Dalton tossed to tight end, John Davies on a fourth and goal situation for the TD, Freshman Jim Corley kicked the point after. Earlier, Carson-Newman had scored on a one yard plunge by Sam Morrison; a 30 yard pass from Quarterback Dale Rutherford to Tommy Jones; and a 24 yard field goal by David Pitt (Pitt also kicked C-N's three PATs). Their final score was tallied on an intercepted pass as cornerback Rick Ford picked off one and returned it 30 yards to the end zone. The Cat's rushing attack netted them 131 yards while a stubborn defensive line held the Eagles to 84 yards on the ground. Paul Smith carried ten times for 49 yards while Freshmen Otis Mcintosh pounded out 46 yards in 11 carrys. Next week the Catamounts will open their home stands against arch rival Appalachian State University. The Cats downed the Apps last season 21-0 in Boone.
