  • Thursday, May 2,1968 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 5 'Mod' Symbols Formerly Known As Commodores By GAIL SAUNDERS "Mod" would be a good word to describe the Symbols, the rock-and-roll groupfrom London, England who played here for a dance Monday in the University ballroom. After playing for the large crowd, the group had much to say about a great variety of subjects. "We like playing for dances, especially for college students," the Symbols said. "However, in England, the dances are a bit different from American ones. We usually play for only an hour in England." A Patient Audience "The audience here was really patient with us," John Milton, the lead singer said. "We really appreciate that If we'd have been in England and had to stop to repair our gear, the kids would have begun 'booing' at us. People in America seem very polite, especially Southern people." The Symbols are composed of Mick, who plays bass guitar; Shawn, lead guitar; Chas, drums, and John, lead singer. Their average age is 23 and none are married. All of the Symbols sing. "All of us lived in the same area aound London and knew each other before we ever got together. We all played in different groups, and all the groups broke up at the same time." "We have had the name the Symbols for the last 2 1/2 years, and nine months ago we added our present drummer. Before we became known as the Symbols we were called the Commodores." "Mickey Most, our recording manager, is the one who got us well-known. He manages other groups too, like Herman's Hermits. Climbing To Stardom "We played for dances and parties a lot at first, and kept trying to make a hit record. The fourth record we cut, called "The Best Part of Breaking Up", was a hit, and after that we were on our way. "Right now our current hit in England is "A Lovely Way to Say Goodnight". It's been on the charts for about the last four weeks. "At first we sang a lot of Beach Boy songs, but recently began to sing other things more — we've trying to get away from the Beach Boy image. Now we sing anything." "Mick and John write a lot of songs, and all of our big hits are songs we wrote." When asked about-the pos- sibilites of expanding the group in the future, John said that they may add an organ or electric piano. They Symbols said that frequently they are influenced by other groups. The Tremeloes John Milton are some of their good friends and they have also met many other groups, including the Rolling Stones and the Beatles. "The Beatles are great blokes," they said. "Their talent is absolutely fantastic." Clothes And Girls Typically American clothes such as white levis, jeans, sweat shirts and "baggies" for surfing (all of the group surfs in England) are thought to be really great by Britishers, they said. "Most British kids like casual clothes best, but in America the clothes are even more casual than in England— we really like them." When asked to compare girls in America and England, they all agreed that "The best- looking girls in the world are in England, especially in London." "It doesn't matter what a British girl wears because she always looks good," John said. "Most of them wear their hair long and straight and wear really short mini skirts, British girls look as though they always take more time to look good than American girls," However, they also said that American girls were more friendly than a lot of British girls. America Is Great When asked what kind of an impression they had of America, all of the group said, "It's great!" or "We really like it here!" They said that Southern people seemed to be more polite than people they had met in New York and Boston, "New York's a 'happening' city, and for that I really like it a lot, but the people there can often be rude," People were a bit rude in other places too, however. One of them said, "I bought two hot dogs today in Memphis, The people didn't even ask me what I wanted on them; they just slapped a lot of stuff on them and threw them out the window." However, in most cases, the Symbols all said they have found most Americans to be very friendly and hospitable. "We surely have enjoyed it very much, being over here," they said, "and we hope to return next year." The Symbols will go on to Charleston, S. C, next, and will continue their tour of the United States until May 12. Students are urged not to use defective coins or Canadian change. Besides, many Canadian coins are worth more than the price of a Coke, "the ritz Sylva, N. C.
