  • Thursday, May 11,1967 THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Page 9 CAROLINIAN SPORTS SECTION Kappa Alpha, Delta Zeta Win Cullowhee Olympics The second annual Cullowhee Olympics, sponsored by Alpha Phi Omega, service fraternity, was held Saturday, May 6 behind Reid Gym,, Kappa Alpha Order and Delta Zeta sorority took division wins over stiff competition In the fun-filled affair. The KA's paced by wins in the chariot race and greased pole climb, nipped the defending champion football team, 16-11.5. Pi Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Phi tied for third with 8 points each. In the women's division, Delta Zeta squeaked by Sigma Kappa, 15-14, with the Women's Recreation Association close behind with 13. Delta Zeta took first place In the sack race, then copped second places in the triumph race, greased pole climb, and tug-of-war. Two colorful events were the men's tug-of-war, and the men's and women's greased pole climb. The tug-of-war was conducted across a large mud hole, and every entered group found the mud at least once, except the winning football team. The greased pole climb was won by Jane McClees, for the wra, while Steve "Peanut-Butter" Loflln won the men's event for Kappa Alpha. Trophies for the winners werepresented on Awards Day, Thursday, May U. 'Doc' Siewert Honored At Physical Education Meeting by DON LUCAS FLOYD T. SIEWERT FCA Holds Roundup For High Schools The Western Carolina chapter of the Fellowhlp of Christ- Ian Athletes sponsored a High School roundup Sunday at the WCC campsite, for schools in the college area. The purpose of the roundup was to introduce FCA to the athletes In these high schools, and show them how they could start their own chapter. Coach BUI Stanley of Brevard was guest speaker, with members of the WCC chapter providing leadership in huddle groups and recreation. Coach Stanley, a member of FCA since Its founding In 1955, spoke on the organization of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the leadership which lt had provided for him not only In athletics, but also throughout life. Coach Ron "Cookie" Blackburn provided the group with grilled hamburgers, made from his own special recipe, and members of the Western Carolina chapter entertained the high school visitors with softball and tag football games. Siewert, past head of the Health and Physical Education department from 1949 through the 1966 school year, was honored last Thursday night at the P.E, Club meeting in Reid Gymnasium. "Doc," as he Is known at Reid Gym, has been a major factor In the success of the department here at Western, Behind his capable leadership during the past 17 years, Western Carolina's physical education department has grown to be respected throughout the southeast as one of the best As an Instructor, Siewert Is always organized and always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone In need of lt, and the respect for him by professional educators throughout the state could not be measured. At the meeting last Thursday a portrait of him was presented, and will be placed In the Reid Health and Physical Education Building. Also featured at the meeting of the P.E. Club was guest speaker Raymond Rhodes, director of student activities of the State Departm3nt of Public Instruction. Rhodes talked on the role of the coach In toe high school program, and stated that "coaches should be hired as much or more for the educational qualifications than for their won-lost records." Rhodes supported the 1960 state curriculum study concerning a coach having a background in physical education along with his liberal arts education. He also expressed his feeling toward future athletics In North Carolina, saying, "I hope the day will come when every coach In every sport Is so certified. Some states are already moving In this direction, and In the meantime, North Carolina should promote certification, at least, of all head coaches of football, basketball, baseball, track, wrestling, and swimming." Dr. James T. Hamilton, present department head, then made the presentation to Floyd Siewert and Introduced officers for next year. They are: Don Dalton, president; Sheila Du ■ vail, vice-president; Janet Cain, secretary; Bobby Hicks, treasurer; Fred Adcock Historian; and BUI Stanley, reporter. RAYMOND RHODES .. speaks to P.
