The 1965 Catamounts have made a name for themselves in the Carolinas Conference. Coaches Dan Robinson, Johnny Wike, and Tom Young have sent a team on the field in each of the past three games that every student at Western Carolina should be proud of. Sporting a rough-and-ready defense and a fired-up offense, the Cats are out to win the Carolinas Conference championship. In the opening game against Carson-Newman, the Catamounts had to fight for victory by virtue of a long bomb, but they never gave up. Quarterback Jim Williams and end Roger Cox teamed up for the decisive play to give the Cats the opening game victory. The win over the Eagles was sweet revenge for the 1964 loss handed to the Cats by Carson-Newman. Other standouts for the Catamounts were "Jet" Johnson, Jerry Mason, Joe Love, Bill Stanley, Jim DeAngelis, John Ruta, Don Powers, and Sandy Davis. With the Carson-Newman game behind them, the Cats put together another long week of practice in preparation for the Appalachian contest. Supported by many faithful Catamount fans, Coach Robinson and the other Cats traveled to Boone for their first conference test. Defense proved to be the hero of the Mountaineer game, as freshman end Joe Love and tackle Kenny Lewis led a hard- charging defensive line which held the Boone boys to a minus 29 yards rushing. "Jet" Johnson scored the lone touchdown of the game on a 24-yard jaunt in the third period. Doug King's extra point wrote the final score as the Cats joined Guilford as the only unbeaten team in the conference. With Appalachian put back in the record book, the Cats encountered still another obstacle on their way to an unde feated season. The Quakers of < Guilford College played host to the Catamounts on a warm I Saturday afternoon. Many Western boosters crowded into the Guilford stadium to see the pride of Cullowhee tangle with the also unbeaten Quakers. Jim Williams put on a fine passing exhibition and backs Bill Zimmerman and "Jet" Johnson led the running game of the Catamounts. Freshman Doug King's 25- yard field goal proved to be the winning marker, as the Cats once again fought back from a 7-6 deficit. Leroy Holden accounted for the Western Carolina touchdown when he grabbed a 21-yard pass from Williams in the end zone. Catawba invades Memorial Stadium this weekend, and there should be plenty of action for all you fans. It will be interesting to see what the speedy Indians can do against that tough Catamount defense. This game is the Catamounts' Homecoming game and should draw a large crowd. Catawba spoiled the 1963 Homecoming game for the Cats by defeating them 7- 0. The season does not stop at Homecoming, however. The Cats have games with Mars Hill, Lenoir Rhyne, Elon, Newberry, and Presbyterian. Lenoir Rhyne and Elon will be important contests for the Cats, but the other games can not be taken lightly If all goes well for the Cats, Western Carolina could have its first championship since 1949. It will require the same desire and spirit that the Cats have shown thus far, plus support from every member of the student body. So, while our Cats are giving us that rough-and- tough defense and that fired- up offense, let them know you are behind them.
