  • Friday, September 25, 1964 The Western Carolinian Page 4 Band Boosts School Spirit School spirit is an important phase of college life. Although all students are pledged to contribute to this aspect of our higher education, some naturally contribute more than others. The WCC Marching Band, ma jorettes and Pep Band are prime examples of unselfish contributors of school spirit. Think what a football game would be like without the twirl- ings of batons, the blare of trumpets, the boom of the drum or our beloved Alma Mater? Yes, music and school are two important factors which this school organization combines. The marching band, this year composed of 59 members, SHOWN ABOVE ARE THE WCC MA- Jorettes for 1964-65. These young ladles will grace our homeball games with routines for which they are so famous. Leading the squad this year will be Jo Anne Boden who has served as head majorette for the past three years. Jane Souther and Charlene Losey are also veterans while the five remaining girls are new on the squad as well as on the campus. is the largest in the history of the college. The recipient of last year's Most Outstanding School Service Organization Award, the band will perform at all of our home games and travel to Lenoir Rhyne and Catawba. Performing out of town games which the complete band is unable to attend is the Pep Band. Members include: woodwinds, Betty Jo Green, Patsy Whittiker, Cathy Bartlett, Ken Smith, Ronald Moore and Aaron Hyatt; brass, Charles Aiken, David Duncan, John Anderson, Nick Kale, Howard Lamb, Kenneth James, Russell Ronquillo and Bobby Buckner; drum, Tom Page, and of course, the CAT. For the clash with Appalachian, half time activities feature precision drills, majorette routines and alumnus Ray Haney, band director at Elizabeth City, N. C, who will piny a trumpet solo, "Bobby's Blues." Twelve high school bands and the Mars Hill College Band will entertain at Homecoming. Hard hours of practice and going over and over intri"qic routines are two factors which make the WCC majorette, composed of three seasoned veterans and five freshmen, outstanding. Prior to her majorette career here at W- CC, Jo Ann was drum majorette during her four years at Woodstown High School and has received 18 awards in National Baton Twirling Association contests. Sophomore Jane Souther began "majoretting" in the fourth grade and continued her career at Rockingham High School where she was head majorette her junior and senior years. She is majoring in Social Science and psychology. Miss Majorette of western North Carolina for 1962, Vicki Russell, a music and education major from Waynesville, has been a majorette for five years and was a member of the Best Majorette Corp in Southeastern Band Festival. Chief majorette in her senior year at Concord High School, freshman Dlanne Freeze has been a majorette throughout her high school days. She is a primary edu- cation major. Returning Charlene Losey of Jacksonville, Florida, a major in math, Spanish and physical education, has been a WCC majorette since her freshman year and was drum majorette her senior year at Havelock High School, Havelock. Vicki Jackson, a math and education major, will be another new face on the field this year. Completing the majorette line—up is freshman Kay Rector of Asheville.
