  • THEWESTE (0LEN1AN VOL. XXIX, NO. 21 Friday, April 10, 1964 CULLOWHEE, N. C. WHG Loan Memorial To Plemmons The Woman's House Government Association at Western College has established a loan fund in memory of Ann Bras- well Plemmons, a WCC graduate who lost her life in a train-auto collision in Charlotte on Thanksgiving Day, 1962. Miss Plemmons was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Plemmons of Asheville, and had earned almost every possible honor as a student at WCC. She was consistently listed on the honor roll and the Dean's list, and was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma, the honorary society which recognizes scholastic achievement. She served as president of Woman's House Government during her senior year, and set an example of effective leadership. She was named "Miss Student Teacher" for 1962, and at the end of the year received both the Best College Citizen and the Student Distinguished Service Award, the only time in the college's history when a young woman student has received both honors. In the fall of 1962 she began teaching in Charlotte City Schools, and was on her way home for Thanksgiving holidays when the fatal accident occurred. At that time, the women students of WCC started collecting a fund with which to set up a memorial. A special committee, headed by Dean of Women Marian Renfro, decided the loan fund for upperclass girls would be the most appropriate way to honor the memory of Miss Plemmons. Dean Renfro said, "It is not a scholarship to recruit new students, but a loan which will, we are sure, give someone the means of graduating. There are times when even a small interest-free loan can be of invaluable help to someone who needs financial support in order to achieve a worthy goal. We are confident that Ann would have approved such a plan." Melton Elected President Chrisman Resignation Accepted Linden Is Appointed New Head Clarence G. Chrisman, Chairman of the Modern Foreign Languages Department at Western Carolina College, has resigned his post as Head of the Department. Chrisman, who has been with WCC since 1943, will remain on the faculty as a Professor of Modern Foreign Languages. His resignation has resulted in the appointment of Dr. Carl Henry Linden as the new department head, effective next fall. Dr. Linden is presently serving as head of the Foreign Languages Department at Mississippi State University. Chrisman, who has studied at institutions in Spain, France, and Mexico, received his Bachelor of Arts degree from William Jewell College in 1927, and his M.A. from the University of Kansas in 1932. As a student, he has attended the Centro de Historicos in Madrid, Spain, The University of Liverpool Spanish Summer School in Santander, Spain, and L'Institut Britannique in Paris, France. Chrisman has worked as a graduate student at the University of Kansas and at the National University of Mexico in Mexico City. George Cops Vice-Presidency; Heavy Vote Brings Landslide Governor Sanford Coming To Campus Next Tuesday Bill Melton was elected President of the WCC Student Body Tuesday. Melton received 803 votes. His opponent, Ellison Magruder, received 335 votes. In the same election Steve George was elected Vice-Presidi the Student Body. He received 641 votes, while his opponents, William Culp, Jr. and Betty Sprung received 263 and 238 votes respectively. Melton, a Junior from Rockingham, N. C, is a graduate of Rockingham High School. He is a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity, the Radio Club, Y.D.C., and SAM. He also holds The Honorable Terry Sanford, Governor of the State of North Carolina, will be on Campus Tuesday, April 14. The Governor will be the honored guest of the Health and Physical Education Club. At a special program to be held in Reid Gymnasium at 11:00, the Governor will be inducted into the club as an honorary member. The program will begin with a music prelude featuring Dr. Edgar vom Lehn, baritone and Mrs. Herbert Pendergraft, pianist. The invocation will be given by Reverend Floyd E. Watson. Special announcements will be made by Dean Taylor Huskins. James Keeter and Charles Rhinehart, President and Vice- President respectively of the In his campaign speech, before the assembly Monday, Melton presented the following points from his platform: He stated that the students of WCC should take an active role in encouraging commercial businesses to locate in Cullowhee. He said that a restaurant, a drug store, and a clothing store were badly nee*' He maintained that the parking facilities needed to be repaired and expanded. He advocated more social activities on campus and promised to work for more dances in the Student Union on week-ends. P.E. Club for 1964-65 school year, will make the presentation of awards. Dr. Paul A. Reid, President of Western Carolina College, will introduce Governor SanTord. The Governor will speak to the students and faculty on "Opportunities Provided by the State of North Carolina to College Graduates." Dr. F. T. Siewert, Head of the Health and Physical Education Department, previously- taught Governor Sanford at the university of North Carolina where the Governor received his undergraduate degree. The women of the Physical Education Department will serve refreshments for Governor Sanford and his party before the program. the position of dormitory counselor in Buchanan and is a full- time announcer for Radio Station WMSJ in Sylva. He announced, however, that, if he was elected, he would resign from the radio station on May 15. His majors are Business Administration and Social Science. MORE THAN 300 STUDENTS marched to President Paul A. Reid's home in the early hours of Tuesday morning to protest the rumored pending appointment of Dr. D. C. Sossomon to the position of Dean of the college. Student Government President Conway Jolly, after presenting several alternatives of action, agreed to lead the group under the condition that It remain peaceful and return quietly to the dormitories after the objective was reached. The orderly demonstrators stopped at the bottom of the President's driveway while Jolly went up to the house to present Dr. Reid with the grievance. Dr. Reid asked for six volunteers to meet with him at 10:00 a.m. With this, the group quietly dispersed. The six were given a chance to discuss the problem fully with Dr. Reid, and one of them stated, "we received a fair hearing, and the President knows how we feel." He said that he recognized the fact that, in order to have good social activities, student participation is needed. He memtioned that Homecoming Week-End and Freshmen dances need to be better planned in order to make them more successful. Melton also stated that the President of the Student Body should be familiar with the Student Faculty Judiciary Committee and also be in a position to counsel and advise students who appear before that committee. Concerning his election, Melton stated, "I am really grateful for the tremendous support extended to me in today's election. I believe it reflects a real support for the program we hope to accomplish next year.
