Rockhurst advanced in the finals by downing Emporia State 63-61. Pan American edged into the finals by defeating Carson-Newman 56-54. Carson - Newman defeated Emporia State for third place in the National final standings. The Eagles were one of the teams that defeated the WCC Catamounts in regular season Play. High Point College, the District 26 Champions, had high hopes of getting into the finals but was eliminated in the quarter-finals round by Emporia State of Kansas with a score of 90-78. Previously, the Panthers had walked over two other teams in the first and second rounds. In the first round, they defeated Ferris College of Michigan 86-70. The second round saw them defeat Georgia Southern 85-76. High Point was seeded second in the tournament when it began. In the opening round of play, Central Connecticut State, the only undefeated team in the tournament, went down at the hands of St. Marys of San Antonio, 64-62. They came into the tournament with a 25-0 record. Friday, March 20, 1964 Page 7 Simpson Signs Duke Catches ACC Crown In Tourney Highly favored Duke defeated Wake Forest to win the Atlantic Coast Conference championship tournament held in Raleigh March 5-7. In the opening round of the tournament March 5, Wake Forest faced Virginia, Clemson took on Maryland, Duke met State and Carolina was matched with South Carolina. Wake Forest dropped Virginia with a score of 79-60 to go on to the semi-finals. Behind with a half-time score of 36- 20 Virginia tried an unsuccessful slow-down in the second half. High scorer for the game was Christie of Wake Forest with 21. Four of his other team mates also had double figures for the night. Caldwell was high for the Cavaliers with 12, having three teammates in double figures. Clemson defeated Maryland in the first round enabling them to meet Wake Forest in the semi-final round. With an impressive score of 81-67, Clemson unveiled a new hero named Nick Milasrovich. Milasrovich, obscured by a 6.7 season scoring average, evolved from the game with 30 points. It was ironic because of his average, as well as the fact that he was suffering from a sore thumb which was jammed the previous Saturday night in the game BELK'S DEPT. Duke clobbered NC State in the first tournament round with a score of 75-44. Down at the half with the score at 24-18, State tried a slow-down, only to see Duke run away with a 31 final score margin. In the final game of the first round, Carolina handed South Carolina an 80-63 defeat. Billy Cuningham, with 34 points, brilliantly led his team to defeat South Carolina. The semi-final rounds, held March 6, saw Duke face UNC and Clemson take on Wake Forest. Finding themselves overwhelmed by the Blue Devil five, Carolina tried, in vain, as State did the previous night, a slow-down in the second half. Succeeding to match Duke in a 20-20 half-time tie, Carolina became the victim of a 65-49 Duke runaway. Billy Cunningham of Carolina was high scorer of the game with 25 points. The second semi-final match consisted of an impressive 86- 64 win for Wake Forest over Clemson. Leonard of Wake Forest was high scorer of the game with 25 points. Three other Deacons hit double figures for the night, while only two Clemson players scored more than 10 points, i The final game of the tournament pitted the favored, as well as nationally ranked, Duke Blue Devils against Wake Forest. In a brilliant 80-59 win, Duke compiled the second largest winning margin in the 11 years of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament. Duke had a half-time lead of only 36-27, but they controlled the boards and placed four players in doubel figures to win the coveted ACC title. JIM SIMPSON, ALL SMOKY MOUNAIN CONFERENCE tackle with the Franklin High School Panthers last year, has recently signed a Grant-in-Aid with Western Carolina College. Jim makes the second outstanding Western North Carolina boy to sign in recent weeks, and Coach Dan Robinson is delighted to sign a boy of Jim's caliber from this area. Jim has played varsity football at Franklin High School for the past three years. The first two years, Jim was coached by Mr. Dick Stott, who recently left the coaching field but is still a member of the Franklin faculty. During his senior year, Jim was coached by Mr. Gene Styles. Coach Dan Robinson has stated that Jim is the type of boy, academically and football-wise, that Is now needed at Western Carolina College. He feels that Jim meets all the qualifications to do an outstanding job as a student and as a football player. Jim is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Simpson of 11 Hill- crest Avenue, Franklin, N.
