THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Friday, March 11, 1960 The Face Of ... (Continued rrom page 2) we say, "It's useless, hopeless. I have dreams too, and I can't do anything about mine. You're no better than I am." Ridiculous? Yes, but that is the reason for the indifferent attitude in America today. We have lost faith in ourselves. If you want a wholesale example, just look at the beatniks, who have perfectly exemplified organized cowardice. It cannot be cured. And it wouldn't be too important if this indefinable attitude was found just in certain places, but it is widespread. Every now and then wishy-washy you really are. a generation slips back and fails itself. The generation in the past ten years or so has slipped beautifully. We have distorted the idea of the American way, which, incidentally, is not a way of making money and spending it. You have distorted it, and I have distorted it, and it is up to every you and I to look at ourselves, really look, and see why we don't have the courage we should, why we're afraid to do what we should. And not until we face the ruthless facts will we ever know if we actually do live in freedom. If we don't arrest this leprosy, we have one consolation — death cures all.
