  • No Social But Much Appreciation Sputniks And Education THE WOMEN FOLK OF MOORE DORMITORY got together last'week to decide whether they should have a picnic or a party with the $60 they had in the treasury. They will have neither. Instead, they voted to give the total amount to help C. J. Harris Community Hospital of 8ylva recover from the $400,000 fire which gutted the structure April 20. Shown presenting the money to W. R. Enloe, chairman of the hospital board, are Carolyn Bartlett, Sue Crawford and Betty Jo Clary. More than 60 students volunteered their services to help clean up after the fire. PARTICIPANTS IN FRIDAY'S PANEL DISCUSSION CON- cerning the effects of recent world developments on public education were, L-R: Mr. M. H. Bowles, district principal of Waynesville Township Schools, Dr. Mabel Crum, head of the WCC English department, Mr. Lester K. Zerfoss, director of executive development, American Enka Corporation, Dr. C. D. Killian, head of the WCC math department. President Paul A. Reid, moderator, and Sherrill Spears, student teacher who presided at the meeting. Looking Back Through The Files ... Eight Years Ago "On each Monday, Wednesday *nd Thursday nights between 8 and 9 your campus station, WWOO, brings you local talent found on the college campus." Eleven Tears Ago "At a recent faculty meeting, the question of setting up a standard lor term papers was brought up. If the proposed plan should be a- dopted, all term papers would be required to measure up to certain levels." (Evidently the proposed plan wasnot adopted, as there are still various ways to do a term pa per at WCC. The secret is discovering how each instructor wants the paper done.) Nine Years Ago "Miss Margaret Truman, the nation's 'Second Lady,' will appear in concert at Hoey Auditorium on Tuesday, October 4, at 8 p.m. Miss Truman's appearance at Western Carolina Teachers College will be her first in the South." Coleman Wilson, his traveling companion, is back for his senior year;at WCTC. "Most interesting of the numerous adventures of Mr. Deans and Coleman was theiDommunist demonstration or the "free for all" street fight in Dublin. Rumor has it that Coleman and the .little professor perched precariously on a statue while the camera of Mr. Deans clicked at the seething mob around him. The surprising thing is that no one was killed!" Summer Faculty Will Teach Interesting Subjects The "Summer Inquisition" will begin as usual at the end of spring quarter.
