PROFESSIONAL DRUG STORE Nationally Advertised Drugs And Cosmetics Traditions... (Continued from page 4) Now, the only time you'll hear the bell is late of an Autumn night, when our football team scores a victory. It's a wonderful sound! The site now occupied by our baseball field, Reid gymnasium, and the children's playground was once an Indian camping ground. It is said that the Tuckaseigee River used to flow through this area, in the days of antiquity, which made it ideal for such a meeting place. When the baseball field was being leveled, cooking pits and animal skeletons were found, as well as other striking evidence of the land's ancient use. Until last year, an Indian mound could be seen where the children now play. When the mound was leveled in 1956, our science department, as well as many individuals, gathered relics such as skeletal remains, bits of pottery, arrow heads, beads, tomahawks, and other artifacts. History came alive, and local interest ran high, when the mound was removed. You might be interested to know that WCC is the only college in the nation with a completely rural location. This may seem a dubious distinction when you want to catch a bus or train! If you would be truly a part of the college, take an interest in your surroundings. Be curious. Ask questions. Familiarize yourself with the region around Cullowhee. Find out what and where Judaculla Rock is. Ask about the Yellow Jacket (you'll find that most of the upperclassmen and faculty can't answer this one for you). Find out how Cullowhee got such an odd name. Learn the various names by which the school has been known. Learn the words to all stanzas of your Alma Mater, and who wrote them. See if you can find out who "Satan" was, and how long he stayed on this campus. Ask someone about Cullo- whee's "tri-weekly", and see if HOOPER MOTOR CO. PONTIACS BUICK AUTHORIZED SERVICE WCC Extension Classes Set For WNC Area Dr. C. D. Killian, director of extension and head of the education department at Western Carolina College, has announced the fall quarter schedule of extension classes. All classes will meet 6:30- 9:30 p.m. on the respective dates. September 23 is the first date for school public relations, to meet in Brevard under the direction of Dr. Raymond M. Ainsley. Dr. Ainsley will conduct the same course in Robbinsville on Wednesday evenings, beginning September 25. This class is open to teachers, administrators, and lay citizens. It is designed to improve understanding of the school, its program, and its needs. Dr. Ainsley will lead the class in examining specific techniques and practices for improving communication between the school and the adult community. On Thursday evenings, beginning S eptember 19, two classes will be taugrt in Canton and two at David Millard Junior High School in Asheville. Dr. Harold Bixler and Dean of Men Howard Aldmon will teach separate sections of educational tests and measurements in Canton. This course will be conducted as a workshop, and will deal with the actual administration and use of tests and other evaluative procedures. Mrs. C. A. Hoyle will teach advanced children's literature in Asheville. This is a comprehensive study of the characteristics of anyone remembers. If you learn all these things, you'll be almost in a class by yourself. But when you've absorbed the "feel" of Western Carolina College, this heritage becomes yours to cherish. Minister's Word Editor's note — In our next issue we will begin a regular series of articles written by local ministers. The first one will be by the Rev. Milford Thumm, pastor of Cullowhee Methodist Church. For this edition we are printing the following article written for "Motive Maga-J' zine" by Rachel Henderlite. STUDENT PRAYER Thou hast called me, O God, to spend this portion of my life in study. Although the world is full of young men and women no older than I who must work in fields and shops to support their families, who must bear arms to defend their country, thou hast released me from these responsibilities, placing upon me the special trust of searching out wisdom. When I look to thee, Judge of all the earth, and then look upon myself, I find myself only half ready in heart and mind because of wasted, careless hours. I fear that I will again be tempted to sloth, to be content with half-truth, to support of doubful causes. I beg thy forgiveness and thy cleansing and courage. Help me never to forget, most loving Lord, that the burden of work that is lifted from me is no heavier than the burden of trust that is placed upon me by this call to study. May the need of the world for clarity and commitment be the need that speaks to me: the need for men and women who have drunk deep of the wisdom of the ages, who have studied hard the conditions of slavery and exploritation, who have pushed through obstacles to new dimensions of life, who will not be content with hostilities where there might be reconciliation. Grant, O Father of all mankind, that I may know the dignity of this call to be a student, that I may never lose sight of the needs of the world I am called to meet, that I may always be assured to thy presence and thy power as I enter now this college experience.
