College Sports News Wrestlers Defeated By Appalachian State's Team The Catamount wrestlers were defeated by the Appalachian State Teachers Mountaineers, 34-0, Mon- d .y, January 17. The Mountaineers swept all eight matches, winning five bouts on falls and three by decisions. The summaries: 121 lbs.—Marco lost to Waynick of Appalachian by a fall in 10 seconds of the third round. 128 lbs.—Heath lost to Dancy, Appalachian, by a fall in 1:55 of the first round. 136 lbs.—Halyburton of WCTC lost by a decision of 7-6 to Ward of Appalachian. 145 lbs.—Arney of WCTC lost by a decision of 4-3 to Crissman of Appalachian. 155 lbs.—Thames lost by a fall in 1:40 of the second round to York of Appalachian. 165 lbs.—McCracken of WCTC went down in 1:25 of the third round to McLean of Appalachian. 175 lbs.—Burleson of WCTC dropped a 3-1 decision to Joines of Appalachian. Unlimited class—Luquire lost by a fall in 1:30 of the second round to Wilson of Appalachian. McGinn Takes Over North State Conference Lead .. Bob McGinn tallied 49 points in three games during the week ending January 21st to gain the North State Conference scoring lead. Mc. Ginn leads Graham, Catawba forward, by 17 points. The leading scorers: McGinn, Western Carolina 192 Graham, Catawba 177 • Moran, High Point 150 Walser, Catawba 150 Cats Down Piedmont College Quint By Score Of 49 to 42 Paced by Bob McGinn, the Cata. mounts overtook the Piedmont College quint just before halftime anl kept a slim lead there on out for a 49 to 42 victory Friday, January 21, on the Catamount court. The Demorest, Ga., visitors grabbed an early lead which wasn't tied until after 11 minutes of play when McGinn knotted the count with a field goal. Piedmont knotted the count and again McGinn broke lose to tie the count at 19-19. From then on the Cats took over the lead to end the first half with a 24-21 advantage. WesteYn Carolina was never headed after that. McGinn's sparkling floorwork set the pace as'did his 21 points, and Burt Lane hogged the rebounds to help keep the Cats in control. Cooper and Russell paced the Piedmont quint with 12 and 11 points. Cats Bow To Georgia State Teachers College The Georgia State Teachers quint, with height to spare, carried out a successful invasion of the Western Carolina Catamount lair Saturday, January 22, by walking off with a 61-45 victory. Roger Parsons, classy floor man for the Statesboro, Ga., club turned the tide just before halftime with three consecutive center shots to put Georgia State in the lead 24- 23. The Cats had made it a close fight up until then, with the lead switching four times, but in the second half the Georgians were never headed.
