However, tickets will still be written during this 72-hour period for illegal parking on the grass, on sidewalks, in faculty lots and for using last year's stickers. Tickets will start being written for no registration Monday, August 28. Writing tickets for no registration is not too big of a problem on this campus, according to a spokesman for the campus security office. "Theft is the worst problem on this campus—it's the worst on any campus," he said. Unreported theft is also a big problem on the WCU campus. Persons who have items stolen should report it to the security office, the spokesman said. "Someone going down the street on a bicycle isn't anything to us. unless we know that a certain kind of bike has disappeared, and then we can look for it. " An engraving tool is available for check-out from the security office. "We are glad to loan it to the students to mark their stereos, bikes, etc. with, and we advise them to store tape players and tape decks that are easily removed in their trunks." he said. Forms are available in the office for identifying engraved articles and to whom the-y belong. The security personnel recommend that students mark their items with their driver's license or social security numbers. Lesser problems on campus other than thefts include illegal parkings, non-registration of vehicles, and the illegal use of drugs. The drug situation on the WCU campus is "very mild" according to the spokesman. "We've had very fe-w marijuana and pill cases. However, all drug cases are prosecuted through the state courts." "We don't think it's very widespread on this campus, but it's one of those hard-to-say type things." Freshmen are restricted to parking only in the Field House parking lot. A new sidewalk with lights is being built from that lot to the girls' dormitories. Upperclassmen can park in the area around their dorms. Zone parking areas are located around the classroom buildings and are reserved only for faculty and staff. Zone two lots are located behind tbe Baptist Church, the Field House, the steam plant and the cafeterias for those who only need limited parking. Commuter parking lots are located behind the University Center, in front of Reid Gym. on Warehouse Road and behind the Baptist and Methodist churches. The new parking lot behind the Baptist church is still under construction and should be opened by the middle of fall semester. It will be a zone two lot for commuters, faculty and staff. WCU's Traffic and Security office has a staff of 14 persons. Pritchard Smith is director and Preston Slocum, Jr. is assistant director. There are also 11 officers, Jwo secretaries and a security guard. The security guard checks buildings at night and svrites tickets for illegal parking, but has no power to arrest. The security office is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (including lunch hours) and is closed on weekends. However, officers are on duty 24 hours a day. seven days a week.
