  • News Briefs, continued Ketchum's talk on photographic images of America's National Parks will include a survey of this country's greatest photographers from the mid- nineteenth century to the present. Ketchum's visit is sponsored by the Art Department, the School of Arts and Sciences, and the Environmental Arts Center of the Highlands Biological Station. Five Western Carolina University students have been selected to play with the Asheville Symphony Orchestra for the 1982-83 season. They are: Cecil Adderley, a sophomore from Columbia, S.C, who plays violin; David C. Clarke, a freshman from Asheville who was chosen to play with the symphony when an extra horn player is needed; James S. Hornsby, Jr., a sophomore from Cullowhee who plays double bass; Gordon R. Nunn, a sophomore from Winston-Salem who plays percussion; and Philip J. Wilson, a freshman from Cincinnati, Ohio, who plays the horn. The meeting will be centered around a discussion and video cassette presentation of "The Causes of the Great Depression." All interested individuals are invited to attend. Western Carolina University now has a student chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). This organization offers those who are interested in computer-related fields aa opportunity for improving their knowledge and skills, meeting business leaders for career opportunities, and interacting with other aspects of computer interests Sponsored by Dr. Gene Baily, the chapter meets Non-credit courses in color photography, passive solar design and solar greenhouses, social dance, aerobic dance and advanced lifesaving will begin in February at Western Carolina University. The courses, sponsored by WCU's division of continuing education, will meet as follows: Color photography: Tuesdays, Feb. 16-April 13,7-9 p.m.. Room 210 Belk Building. Taught by Larry Tucker, S35. Passive solar design and solar greenhouses: Thursdays, Feb. 18-March 6, 7-9:30 p.m., Center for Improving Mountain Living. Susan Smith, principal instructor. $12 students, $17 non-students. Social dance: Thursdays, Feb. 18-April 15,7:45-8:45 p.m., Reid Gym dance studio. Taught by June Benson. $35 per couple. Aerobic dance for intermediates: Thursdays, Feb. 18-April 15, 6-7 p.m., Reid Gym dance studio. Taught by June Benson. $20. Red Cross advanced lifesaving: Tuesdays, Feb. 16- April 27, 6-8 p.m., Reid Gym pool. Taught by Dr. Otto Spilker. $25. Special requirements for enrollment.
