  • News Briefs Dr. Richard Gentry has been appointed director of the Western Carolina University Reading Center. Gentry, an assistant professor in the department of elementary education and reading, has been a member of the WCU faculty since 1977. The WCU Reading Center provides diagnostic and remedial services and reading improvement courses for children, college students and adults. The first annual Miss Blue Ridge Pageant for Haywood, Macon and Jackson Counties will be held at Hoey Auditorium on Friday, November 19 at 7:30 p.m. This is a Miss America preliminary pageant with the winner competing in the Miss North Carolina Pageant in Raleigh. Tickets are $4,00 and children under 6 are admitted free of charge. Come to the pageant and support your favorite contestant! Camp Lab students in kindergarten through second grade are invited to attend Super Turkey's Thanksgiving Party sponsored by WCU's Recreation Leadership class. The event will take place November 19th from 3-4:30 p.m. in Reid Gym Dance Studio. A permission slip must be signed in order for a child to participate and may be obtained at Camp Lab. UG Environmental Mascot Western Carolina University and the Universidad Santiago de Cali of Colombia, South America, have signed an agreement to initiate faculty and student exchange programs. The agreement climaxed a two-day visit by Cali University President Dr. Francisco Jose Lamus Barrios to the WCU campus. Lamus is particularly interested in exchanges involving Western's marketing, management, biology, chemistry, computer science and technology programs and in small business assistance. The Universidad Santiago de Cali has an enrollment of about 7,000, including some 300 graduate students. The Organization of Ebony Students will hold a meeting in the Old Student Union on Thursday, November 18, 1982. Richelle Young was nominated "member of the month" for the month of October. To be nominated for "member of the month," a student must attend meetings regularly and have his/her dues paid, and also participate in events the organization sponsors. Two faculty members in the School of Business and one in the School of Education and Psychology have been appointed as acting departmental heads. Dr. Retha H. Kilpatrick will serve as the acting head of the department of administrative services and Dr. John T. Overbey will serve as acting head of the department of accounting and information systems. Eleanor W. Lofquist has been appointed acting head of the department of elementary education and readine. Mrs. Kilpatrick is an associate professor of office administration and has been a WCU faculty member since 1964. She is a graduate of Kansas State University and the University of Georgia. Overbey, who holds the rank of professor, came to WCU from West Virginia University this year. He is a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Texas. A member of the WCU faculty since 1972, Mrs. Lofquist is assistant professor of elementary education. She holds a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a master's and educational specialist degrees from Western Carolina University. BACCHUS, a national college and community action program for alcohol abuse prevention, has awarded a $100 scholarship to Western Carolina University's BACCHUS chapter. The WCU chapter is using the scholarship to help send its officers to the organization's national General Assembly, to be held Nov. 11-13 in St. Louis. Attending the meeting will be chapter president Sandy Bowman, a senior information systems major and treasurer Charles Harris, a junior marketing and management major from Franklinton. The WCU chapter of BACCHUS, which stands for of Western Carolina University adjourned at approximately 5:20 p.m. On October 26, 1982, a group ol students met in Forsyth auditorium to form the Western Carolina University Student Chapter of the National Association of Accountants I hey are affiliated with the Asheville chapter which has about 200 members, mainly businessmen. As members of N A A, the) vwll receive many benefits including a subscription to the monthly magazine, Management Accounting, use ol the employment service assistance in seeking information on specific accounting problems, an opportunity to attend courses ami seminars held across the country, and the chance to attend the monthly meetings in Asheville. NAA provides its members with information on current accounting and related data as applied to all types of economic endeavor. This is done through the seminars presented in Asheville and Cullowhee. On November 16, all interested current members will be going to the Asheville meeting to hear about the recent stock market trends and the present opportunities. This will be presented by Mr. J.C. Bradford, the senior partner of J.C. Bradford, Inc., a brokerage firm out of Nashville, Tennessee. Membership in the NAA is not restricted to accounting majors anyone interested may join.
