wh Owns Nz veep rf Cy ' fxf WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA 28723 OFFICE OF THE CHANCELLOR May 16, 1982 To the 1982 Graduates The problems as well as the promises of the decade of the eighties have been anticipated, and they are now upon us. The problems present great challenges that, at times, leave us somewhat discouraged; but it is not a time for despair. You, the 1982 Graduates of Western Carolina University, enter a period which we have anticipated and for which you have prepared. As you move out into the world and leave the university of which you are such a very important part, we know that there will be challenging situations and exciting times ahead for you. Never before in our history have we needed leadership any more than at this time. We can provide you a long list of the needs and opportunities for you to demonstrate those characteristics of leaders which we know you possess. There are rumblings of wars between nations, financial strife and difficulties in our economy, and widespread insecurity among individuals. All of these represent challenges which you will face; but, at the same time, they present opportunities. You have the preparation that is necessary to provide the leadership required to overcome these problems whether they be at the international, national, or personal level. We are counting upon you and the contribution you can make to bring us through the decade of the eighties and on into a brighter future for all of mankind. I want to wish for you the very best and, above all, encourage you to keep in touch with Western Carolina University and those of us who have had the opportunity to know you. Good luck in all of your endeavors. Sincerely, H. F. Robinson Chancellor WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY IS A CONSTITUENT INSTITUTION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF NCRTH CAROLINA ANDO AN AFFIRMATIVE ACTION/EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER
