Hope, Jr., of Charlotte was appointed Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Commerce in June 1983 by Gov. James B. Hunt Jr. As Secretary of Commerce, he is responsible for a variety of pro- grams in the state including industrial development, international trade, tourism, state ports, energy, the Industrial Commission, and the Employment Security Commission. The vice chairman of the board of directors of First Union National Bank of Charlotte, Secretary Hope is past president of the American Bankers Association, an organization of the nations 14,000 banks. Widely known and respected in the banking industry, he began his banking career in 1947 as a teller and has been active in all phases of bank management. The former chairman of the board of trustees of Wake Forest University, Secretary Hope is dean of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. He has served as chairman of the board and president of the North Carolina Symphony Society and as chairman of the North Carolina Alliance for Arts in Education. He is a graduate of Wake Forest University and Mars Hill College, and has completed graduate work at the Harvard Business School and the Stonier School of Banking at Rutgers. oe cS
