  • Ebony Chronicles October '95 Monroe Representin' in SGA By: Tarleisha "Tesa" Gray Some people choose to be leaders, while others choose to be followers. Joesph Monroe chose to be a leader. Monroe serves as the assistant to the vice-president of the Student Government Association. Monroe is the first African American to serve on the Executive Board of SGA since the 1970's, Monroe was appointed to assist Vice President, Rhonda Cole by SGA President Jessica Laverty. As a freshman Monroe was a SGA senator. When Monroe entered Western Carolina University as a freshman he felt African Americans were taking a low profile. He felt by not getting involved African Americans were in a 90's form of slavery, because decisions were being made without us forcing our opinion. He felt the opportunity was there, but the iniative to get involved just wasn't taken. Monroe felt the need to get involved and to get other African Americans involved. He wanted their to be a difference in the future for the African Americans at WCU. "I wanted to get on the inside so others would follow. I use the Project Care motto, 'We lift , as we climb', as one of my personal mottos. I want to be a role model for other brothers and sisters. If you don't try you will never know what you can do." Monroe plans to introduce several resolutions to SGA this year. Issues that he plans to address include 24-hour visitation, parking, and diversity. He hopes that his plans will make campus life better for all of the students at Western. Monroe is a very busy sophomore at WCU majoring in Chemistry Premed. In addition to being the Executive Asst. to the Vice President of SGA, he is also the president of Black Theater Ensemble, treasurer of OES and the WCU Inspirational Choir, member of the staff of Ebony Chronicles, a member of the Men's Track and Field team, and a resident's assistant in Leatherwood Residence Hall. Joseph Monroe II is the son of Joseph Monroe I and Patricia Monroe. Both of his parents are ministers and serve as his role models. Joe said, "My family is the back bone of my success". He looks at the strength in his grandmother which encourages him to be strong. Joe said, "My parents encourage me but don't pressure me. They taught me the right things to do and I chose to do the right things. They also taught me not to be a follower but to be a leader". Joe likes to be down to earth so that people feel free to come and talk to him about anything. Joe said, "If I had to give advise to younger kids it would be to keep your head on straight and be able to get along with anyone, because in the real world you will need those traits to succeed". He said, "With encouragement from my family and help from God I have been successful and will continue to succeed. As long as I remember where I came from and where I am going, no one can stop me".
