This photograph and caption, “The Thomas Road,” appeared in a 1950 of the Asheville Citizen-Times. The original photograph was taken by George Masa in 1930. Photographer George Masa (1881-1933) was active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The trip, recorded in the photograph, was made by Masa and Horace Kephart (1862-1931), a noted naturalist, woodsman, journalist, and author and promoter of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
