  • Meals: Supper and breakfast will be provided at Camp Phillip Nelson. Bring mess kits. Lunch and supper for Sunday should be taken. MAY 26 and 27 HIKERS' CONVENTION (SOUTHERN APPALACHIAN CLUBS HIKE) MOUNT WHITESIDES Highlands, North Carolina, a mountain resort which is fast becoming a popular vacation center, has been selected for a joint meeting of the Carolina Mountain Club of Asheville, the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club of Atlanta, the Nantahala Appalachian Trail Club of Almond, North Carolina, and our Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. This meeting should be well attended, since the place is centrally located and easily accessible from all sides by newly constructed highways. Mount Whitesides, the objective of the trip, has never been climbed by our club before. From Highlands (altitude 4000 feet) we drive about four miles to the base, where we camp at a spring only a short distance from the cars. After a five minute walk from the camp we come out on top, where we can look into four states. What a breath taking view! It seems that we are in the center of the most mountainous country in the world. Whitesides (5000 feet high) is located at the northern end of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Looking east, one sees the mountains of South Carolina fade into foot hills and plains. Toward the north, the dark and looming Plott Balsam Mountains stretch out in front of us.
