Stories of mountain folk broadcast: 2014-11-22

  • Amy begins the show by continuing her reading of the play "Samantha Bumgarner and the History of Mountain String Music", which was produced in 2001 by CSA and the 4th grade students of Jackson County. “Here Comes the Sun” accompanies the reading. Doreyl’s guest on Creative Corner is Nanci Leigh of Franklin, who talks about the jewelry she makes and some of the new techniques she has been working with. “Cotton-Eye Joe” by Lois Hornbostel follows the interview. On Stories of Mountain Folk, Amy continues her talk with walking historian Bill Crawford, who shares some more of his memories of growing up in Sylva and some of the businesses that used to be downtown. The interview is followed by “Appalachian Fire” by Appalachian Fire. On This Is My Home, Joe hosts Ruth Truett, a weaver at John C. Campbell Folk School. She talks about a Shaker-themed weekend at the school and the history of Shaker art and culture. “Smith’s Reel” by the McDowell Family follows the interview. On Down Another Road, Judy talks once again with Winona Eye of Cullowhee, who shares some memories of her father and white lightning. The interview is followed by “Little Brown Jug” by Henry Queen, and the show ends with “Prayer Wheel” by Andrews & Lawrence.
