Speech of R. L. M. in the Pageant, page 1

Item
?

Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).

  • In this speech Robert L. Madison (1867–1954) is asking for money to provide training for teachers in rural communities or to at least make a beginning in providing such training in Cullowhee, if not in other areas of the state. Madison is considered as the founder of Western Carolina University and served as the first president of Cullowhee High School, later Cullowhee Normal and Industrial School, from 1889-1912 and from 1920-1923.
  • Speech of R. L. M. in the Pageant. My request is modest. I beg no lavish funds, though the object of my plea has burned itself, like fire, into my soul! I come from the distant West where the Mountains reach up to kiss the sky and to be themselves in beauteous garments of cloud and sunshine. There I have labored for eight long years among young men and young women thirsting for knowledge. They dwell in homes where illiteracy is prevalent, yet ignorance is rare. In the experiences of life, they are wise, but they are without the blessings that books and music and art may bring. Their school terms are short; their teachers, untrained. Such teachers must come from the student-bodies of local private hight schools. Teachers well trained at Chapel Hill and Greensboro will supply the teaching corps of our city graded schols, but whence will come specially prepared instructors for our rural district public schools?
